This 3'1" x 3'10" Antique Persian Nahavand Tribal Rug is a rare pictorial example of traditional Nahavand weaving, distinguished by its deep indigo field and animated animal motifs arranged in a compartmental tribal layout. The rug reflects authentic village craftsmanship, where storytelling and symbolism take precedence over symmetry, resulting in a highly expressive and collectible textile.
Design and Motifs
The field is composed of irregular geometric compartments filled with stylized animals, abstract figures, and symbolic elements, a hallmark of Nahavand pictorial rugs. Horses, birds, and tribal symbols appear throughout the design, rendered in a naïve, folk-art manner that gives the rug its strong narrative character. The asymmetrical composition reinforces its tribal origin and handcrafted authenticity.
Border and Framing
The rug is framed by multiple borders featuring repeating geometric motifs, rosettes, and tribal medallions. The main border incorporates bold ivory panels with angular floral symbols, contrasted by red and indigo guard borders that provide visual structure without overpowering the lively field.
Colors and Their Placement
A deep indigo blue dominates the field, providing dramatic contrast for the warm brick red, camel, and ivory motifs. Accents of terracotta, olive green, dusty teal, and soft coral are strategically placed throughout the figures and borders, creating depth and visual rhythm while maintaining an earthy, natural palette typical of antique Nahavand rugs.
Materials and Craftsmanship
Hand-knotted using durable village wool on a wool foundation, this rug was woven for everyday use while preserving artistic expression. The wool shows a naturally aged patina, soft to the touch with excellent structure, reflecting the quality and longevity of traditional Nahavand craftsmanship.
Condition Note
This antique rug is in very good condition for its age, with honest wear consistent with time and use. The pile remains healthy, colors are well-preserved, and the structure is stable, making it suitable for both display and light residential use.
