Step into the world of enduring craftsmanship with this 6'3 x 9'5 Antique Persian Bijar Rug, an exceptional example of tribal weaving from the legendary rug-producing city of Bijar, Iran. Revered for their unyielding structure and intricate artistry, Bijar rugs are often nicknamed the Iron Rugs of Persia—a testament to their unmatched density, durability, and longevity. This hand-knotted masterpiece captures both the cultural legacy and the technical excellence of the Kurdish weavers who brought it to life.

Design & Motifs

The saturated brick red field is adorned with an allover Herati pattern, meticulously repeated across the surface to create a rhythmic floral lattice. Rosette-shaped medallions in butter yellow and forest green float within the crimson expanse, while delicate vinework in midnight blue, sage, ivory, and celestial blue interconnects the garden of motifs. The complexity of the drawing is a nod to Bijar's weaving tradition, which often incorporates a mixture of tribal dynamismand urban refinement.

The rug’s broad ivory border, filled with flowerheads, palmettes, and stylized leaves, offers a striking contrast to the densely decorated field. Flanking guard bands in royal blue and soft tan complete the visual frame, enhancing both structure and symmetry. The color harmony is bold yet sophisticated, making this rug a statement piece for classic and contemporary interiors alike.

Materials & Craftsmanship

This antique rug is hand-knotted from highland Persian wool, known for its high lanolin content, which gives the pile a luxurious sheen and exceptional softness. The wool has been tightly packed using the traditional wet-tension packing method unique to Bijar, where each knot is compressed with a heavy metal tool, resulting in an exceptionally dense and compact pile that resists crushing and wear.

The foundation—crafted from cotton warps and wefts—supports the pile with unshakable stability, while the backside reveals the clarity of the knot structure and the expert use of natural dyes. This rug likely features over 300 knots per square inch, contributing to its crisp detail and fine rendering of motifs.

Condition & Provenance

This is a true antique, estimated to be 50-60 years old, and remains in excellent condition. The colors have mellowed gracefully over time, developing a patina that only age can produce. There is no color bleeding or structural damage, and the edges and fringes are intact—a rare feature for a rug of this age and origin.

Bijar rugs are woven by Kurdish artisans in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. Their methods, passed down through generations, prioritize integrity over speed. Each rug is not only a floor covering but a durable heirloom.
