This 6'9 x 9'8 Persian Bijar Rug is a rare and highly desirable example of the weaving artistry that has earned Bijar rugs their legendary status. Known as the “Iron Rugs of Persia,” Bijars are celebrated for their extraordinary strength, dense construction, and timeless patterns. This piece stands out not only for its remarkable craftsmanship but also for its intricate patterning and lavish interplay of colors, making it a true collector’s item and a luxurious addition to refined interiors.

Why This Rug Is Special

Bijar rugs hail from Kurdistan in northwestern Iran, where master weavers developed a unique knotting technique called wet weaving. During weaving, each row of knots is tamped down with an iron tool while the wool is damp, compressing the pile so tightly that the rug feels almost indestructible. This method is the reason Bijars are often referred to as “Iron Rugs” — they can withstand generations of use without losing their integrity.

This rug exemplifies the qualities that make Bijars so coveted:

  • Exceptional Density: A thick, resilient wool pile on a strong cotton foundation.

  • Durability with Elegance: Despite their toughness, Bijars maintain astonishing clarity in their motifs and harmonious balance in their colors.

  • Rarity of Design: The rug features a sophisticated all-over lattice pattern with a dramatic central medallion and lush borders, showcasing the weavers’ mastery of symmetry and complexity.

Colors & Their Placement

  • Field / Background: The main ground is a rich dark indigo navy, which provides depth and makes the other colors glow with vibrancy.

  • Central Medallion: A bold crimson red medallion, framed with scrolling vines and ivory flourishes, anchors the composition. Within the medallion, touches of gold, sky blue, and moss green appear, enhancing its regal aura.

  • Corner Spandrels: Radiant crimson red fills the corners, echoing the medallion, and decorated with ivory floral motifs, sage green leaves, and subtle sky blue blossoms.

  • All-Over Pattern: Across the navy field, a repeating lattice of rosette flowers in soft pink, coral, moss green, and sky blue creates rhythm and density. This compact patterning is a signature of Bijar rugs, blending intricacy with boldness.

  • Borders: The wide primary border glows in deep red, brimming with oversized palmettes, rosettes, and swirling vines in ivory, gold, green, and light blue. Secondary borders in navy and ivory frame the composition, adding structure and harmony.

  • Accents: The rug includes small but deliberate hints of pale gold and beige to highlight blossoms, leaves, and vine scrolls, ensuring the design remains dynamic and luxurious.

Weaving Technique

  • Knotting: Persian (asymmetrical) knots, packed extremely tightly using the wet-weaving method.

  • Pile: Pure wool, providing natural sheen and softness while ensuring durability.

  • Foundation: Cotton warp and weft for added stability.

  • Density: High knot count combined with heavy packing, giving the rug both clarity of design and unmatched longevity.

  • Texture: The rug has a heavy, firm handle — a hallmark of true Bijars.

Bijar Rugs – A Legacy of Excellence

Owning a Bijar is to own a piece of Persian weaving history. Revered by collectors worldwide, Bijars bridge the gap between practical function and aesthetic brilliance. Their durability makes them family heirlooms, while their artistry ensures they remain timeless in both traditional and modern interiors.
