Professional Rug Washing

Over time, even a well-maintained handmade rug accumulates dust, allergens, dirt and residue that regular vacuuming simply cannot remove. The fibers deep in the pile trap particles that work their way down to the foundation over years of use. A professional wash does not just clean the surface. It cleans the entire rug from pile to foundation, restoring the colors, refreshing the fibers and extending the life of the piece significantly.

This is especially important for genuine handmade Persian and Oriental rugs. These rugs are made from natural wool and silk, which respond beautifully to a proper professional wash but can be permanently damaged by incorrect cleaning methods. Household carpet cleaning machines, steam cleaners and chemical spot treatments are not designed for handmade rugs and can cause shrinkage, color bleeding, fiber damage and distortion of the foundation.

Our professional rug washing process is specifically designed for authentic handmade rugs. We assess each rug individually before washing, identifying its origin, construction, dye type and any areas of sensitivity. We use cleaning methods and solutions appropriate to each specific rug rather than a one-size-fits-all approach that treats every rug the same regardless of what it is made from.

After washing, rugs are carefully dried in a controlled environment to prevent any risk of mold, mildew or fiber distortion. The result is a rug that looks and smells fresh, with colors that often appear noticeably brighter and richer than they did before cleaning.

How Often Should You Wash a Persian Rug?

For a rug in a normally used room, a professional wash every 3 to 5 years is ideal. For rugs in high traffic areas or homes with children and pets, every 1 to 2 years is recommended. Regular vacuuming between washes keeps the surface clean and the pile fresh.

Rug Repair and Restoration

A damaged Persian or Oriental rug is not a lost cause. In most cases, skilled repair work can restore a rug to a condition that makes the damage virtually invisible, extending its life by decades and preserving its value. The key is acting before damage spreads. A small area of worn pile, a fraying edge, or a moth-damaged section that is repaired early is far less expensive to fix than the same problem left to worsen over time.

At Rugs.net we handle a wide range of repair and restoration work, including:

1
Fringe Repair and Replacement The fringe of a rug is often the first area to show wear. Fraying, knotting, thinning or missing fringe can be repaired or replaced to restore the clean finished look of the rug ends.
2
Edge and Selvage Repair The edges of a handmade rug are wrapped or overcast to protect the warp threads. When this wrapping wears away or unravels, the rug begins to lose structural integrity from the sides. Edge repair stops this damage before it spreads to the pile.
3
Pile Reweaving Areas of worn, missing or damaged pile can be rewoven by hand to restore the original pattern and texture. This is highly skilled work that requires matching the exact color, wool type and knotting technique of the original rug. Done correctly it is virtually undetectable.
4
Foundation Repair Damage to the warp and weft foundation of a rug, whether from rot, pet damage, heavy wear or improper cleaning, requires careful structural repair to restore the integrity of the rug before pile work can be completed.
5
Moth Damage Repair Moths target natural wool fibers and can cause significant damage to handmade rugs if left untreated. We can treat the rug to eliminate any remaining moth activity and repair the damaged areas of pile through reweaving.
6
Pet Damage and Stain Treatment Pet urine, chewing and scratching can all cause damage ranging from staining to physical destruction of pile and foundation. We assess each case individually and provide a clear, honest quote for what can be done and what the result will look like.
Honest Quotes Before We Start

We never start repair work without giving you an exact quote first. You will know precisely what the work costs and what the result will be before we touch the rug. No surprises, no hidden costs.

Pricing

We believe in transparent, straightforward pricing with no hidden fees and no surprises. Here is how our pricing works for both washing and repair.

Rug Washing Pricing

Rug Type Starting Price Notes
Wool Persian and Oriental Rugs $3.50 per sq ft Starting price. Final price based on rug size and condition.
Silk or Part-Silk Rugs $5.00 per sq ft Starting price. Silk requires specialist handling and care.

Important Note on Pricing

The prices above are starting rates for rugs in normal condition. Rugs that require additional work may be priced higher. Specifically:

Heavily soiled rugs that have accumulated years of deep dirt, embedded grime or heavy staining require a more intensive cleaning process that takes significantly more time and product. These rugs will be quoted at a higher rate than a normally maintained rug of the same size.

Rugs with pet urine present a specialist challenge that goes beyond standard washing. Pet urine penetrates deep into the pile and foundation, causes odor that must be fully neutralized, and in some cases affects the dyes. Treating a rug with pet urine properly requires specialized deodorizing treatments and additional processing time. These rugs are always quoted individually after assessment, and the price will reflect the actual work required. We will always give you an exact quote and you decide whether to proceed before we start.

Example Washing Costs (Normal Condition)

4 x 6 ft wool rug (24 sq ft) From $84
6 x 9 ft wool rug (54 sq ft) From $189
8 x 10 ft wool rug (80 sq ft) From $280
9 x 12 ft wool rug (108 sq ft) From $378
6 x 9 ft silk or part-silk rug (54 sq ft) From $270
9 x 12 ft silk or part-silk rug (108 sq ft) From $540

Heavily soiled rugs and rugs with pet urine damage are quoted individually after assessment. Call us at 855-576-7705 and we will give you an honest estimate before you commit to anything.

Rug Repair Pricing

Repair pricing depends entirely on what needs to be fixed, the size of the affected area, the complexity of the pattern being rewoven, and the materials required. There is no standard flat rate because no two repair jobs are the same.

What we commit to is this: before we touch your rug, you will receive an exact quote. You will know precisely what the work costs, what it involves, and what the result will look like. If you decide not to proceed, there is no charge for the assessment. We do not start work without your full approval.

No Surprises. Ever.

Whether it is a routine wash or a heavily soiled rug with pet damage, you approve the quote before we start. The final bill matches the quote. That is how we do business and it is non-negotiable.
