Colors and Placement

The dominant color is a vivid, saturated cobalt blue that covers the entire field and gives the rug an immediate, eye-catching presence. Against this deep blue ground, the yellow gold of the figures, bands, and accents glows with strong contrast, creating the bold primary palette that is a signature of authentic Gabbeh weaving. Red appears in the mountain bands, as an accent in the central tree motif, and in scattered small elements across the field, adding warmth and energy to the composition. Ivory fringe at both ends completes the piece with a clean, natural finish. The thick, shaggy wool pile gives the rug a tactile quality and a depth of color that is unique to hand knotted Gabbeh construction.

Gabbeh Rugs

Gabbeh rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the Fars province in southwestern Iran, particularly the Qashqai and Luri peoples, and have been woven for centuries as utilitarian floor coverings for tent and village life. The word gabbeh in Persian means raw or natural, and the design tradition reflects this: weavers work without cartoons or pattern guides, expressing personal visions, landscapes, and narratives directly into the wool. This Poshti is woven on a wool foundation with a thick wool pile, consistent with traditional tribal Gabbeh construction. The low knot count relative to urban Persian rugs is not a deficiency but a defining characteristic of the style, as the thick pile and bold motifs are designed to be read from a distance and to withstand heavy daily use. This piece is a genuine example of one of the most sought-after categories in tribal Persian weaving.
