1'3" x 2' Persian Gabbeh Baby Rug | Poshti | Cobalt Blue | Tribal Pictorial | Wool
This charming small Persian Gabbeh, known in the trade as a Poshti, is a rare and collectible piece that carries far more significance than its modest size might suggest. Traditionally, Poshti Gabbehs like this one were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribal weavers as sample pieces to demonstrate how a larger Gabbeh rug would look and feel, giving buyers and traders a tangible reference before commissioning a full-size piece. As handmade Persian rugs have become increasingly rare in the global market, these small samples have grown substantially in value and desirability among collectors and enthusiasts of tribal weaving. This example is hand knotted entirely in wool, pile and foundation alike, and is in excellent condition, never used.
Design and Motifs
The design is a classic Gabbeh pictorial composition rendered with the spontaneous, unfiltered quality that defines authentic tribal weaving. The cobalt blue ground serves as a sky-like backdrop across which a narrative scene unfolds. A central yellow gold rectangle framing a stylized tree figure in navy and red sits at the heart of the field, functioning as a compositional anchor. A small yellow gold animal figure, likely a deer or goat, appears to the upper left, while a human figure rendered in yellow and red appears in the lower right, suggesting a scene from daily nomadic life. Horizontal bands of red mountain shapes layered with yellow zigzag lines run across the upper and lower portions of the field, a characteristic Gabbeh device that evokes the landscape of the Zagros mountains where these rugs were traditionally woven. Scattered yellow and red dot accents fill the open blue ground throughout, adding life and movement to the composition.
Colors and Placement
The dominant color is a vivid, saturated cobalt blue that covers the entire field and gives the rug an immediate, eye-catching presence. Against this deep blue ground, the yellow gold of the figures, bands, and accents glows with strong contrast, creating the bold primary palette that is a signature of authentic Gabbeh weaving. Red appears in the mountain bands, as an accent in the central tree motif, and in scattered small elements across the field, adding warmth and energy to the composition. Ivory fringe at both ends completes the piece with a clean, natural finish. The thick, shaggy wool pile gives the rug a tactile quality and a depth of color that is unique to hand knotted Gabbeh construction.
Gabbeh Rugs
Gabbeh rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the Fars province in southwestern Iran, particularly the Qashqai and Luri peoples, and have been woven for centuries as utilitarian floor coverings for tent and village life. The word gabbeh in Persian means raw or natural, and the design tradition reflects this: weavers work without cartoons or pattern guides, expressing personal visions, landscapes, and narratives directly into the wool. This Poshti is woven on a wool foundation with a thick wool pile, consistent with traditional tribal Gabbeh construction. The low knot count relative to urban Persian rugs is not a deficiency but a defining characteristic of the style, as the thick pile and bold motifs are designed to be read from a distance and to withstand heavy daily use. This piece is a genuine example of one of the most sought-after categories in tribal Persian weaving.
