Oval floor coverings this large are genuinely uncommon, and one drawn in the French Aubusson manner is rarer still. This 11'3" x 17'10" European piece dates to the 1970's, worked in wool on a cotton foundation, and its true oval outline is cut into the weave itself rather than trimmed down from a rectangle. It is a serious room filler that belongs with the oversize rugs rather than the standard sizes, yet the palette is so soft that it lightens a big room instead of weighing it down. The pile is full and even across the whole surface, with no thin areas, and the piece ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the French Aubusson formula: a wide open field, one loose bouquet floating at the center, and a garland of leafwork running around the perimeter. The central spray gathers full blown roses, tulips, small daisies and 2 large rosettes on thin dark stems, all of it drawn freehand rather than mirrored, so no 2 quarters of the bouquet repeat exactly. Around the edge, cocoa brown acanthus scrolls curl inward in long C shapes, each pair broken by a single rose set on 2 sage leaves, and 4 corner clusters of mixed flowers step in from the border toward the field. Because the plan is oval, the border has to bend continuously, and the weaver kept the scroll spacing even all the way around the turn, which is the hardest part of building oval rugs at this scale. Roughly two thirds of the surface is left as quiet open ground, which is exactly why the design reads calm rather than busy.

A Soft Beige Ground with Faded Garden Color

The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward cream where the light catches the pile and toward a deeper sand tone in the shadows, so the field never looks flat. Against it the flowers are deliberately muted: dusty rose and old burgundy in the roses, a grayed sage green through the leaves and stems, soft yellow gold in the scattered star flowers and buds, and small touches of pale blue gray in the tiny five petal blossoms. The border scrolls are the strongest color on the rug, a cocoa brown outlined in a darker chocolate, with a mid tan filling the wider leaf bodies so the scrollwork has depth instead of sitting as flat line drawing. Fine black stems thread between the blossoms and give the bouquet its shape. It is a neutral palette with real color inside it, which makes it easy to live with next to cream, taupe, sage or aged wood.

European Weaving in the French Tradition

The Aubusson and Savonnerie workshops of central France set the pattern for European floor coverings from the 17th century onward, and their vocabulary of open grounds, acanthus scrollwork and naturalistic flower sprays was still being woven across Europe in the 1970's, when this piece was made. What marks it as workshop rather than factory output is the handling of the shape and the wool. The pile is thick, springy and evenly clipped, the wool is sturdy long staple stock that has kept its body after 50 years, and the oval was planned from the first row rather than cut afterward, with the border pattern scaled to close cleanly at the top and bottom curves.
