This rare square antique Bijar rug showcases the renowned durability and artistry that the “Iron Rugs of Persia” are known for. The field is richly decorated with a continuous Herati-inspired lattice of rosettes, palmettes, and diamond forms, each framed in intricate outlines. The balance of symmetry across a nearly perfect square format makes this rug highly unusual, as antique Persian weavers seldom created rugs in this dimension.
Patterns
The rug features an allover repeat pattern that radiates across the warm rust-red field, framed by an elaborate multi-tier border system. The wide main border highlights scrolling floral palmettes set against a forest-green background, anchored by repeating floral cartouches and serrated leaves. The inner and outer guard borders provide rhythmic floral bands that create harmony with the dense field.
Materials and Craftsmanship
