This 1'3" x 2' Persian Bijar Poshti Rug, handmade in Bijar, Iran, showcases the renowned craftsmanship and durability associated with Bijar rugs, often referred to as the "Iron Rugs of Persia." This small but mighty piece, made with a cotton foundation and a wool pile, is a sample rug, or Poshti, traditionally crafted to display the design and feel of larger counterparts. The wool used in Bijar rugs is of the highest quality, offering both softness and long-lasting durability. With an intricate floral and geometric design, this rug features a classic Bijar motif of interconnected blossoms and vines framed by a thick border, which enhances the sense of structure. This collectible rug is not only a beautiful display piece but also a valuable part of Persian heritage.

Colors:
The color palette includes rich tones of deep red, ivory, black, blue, and green. The red backdrop serves as the canvas for detailed floral designs in shades of blue and green, while the ivory border and black accents provide balance and contrast. Subtle hints of mustard yellow in the floral details add warmth, making this a visually captivating piece.

  • Deep Red (Base Color): The dominant color, covering the background, adds richness and warmth to the rug. It's a traditional hue often used in Bijar rugs to evoke a sense of luxury and comfort.

  • Ivory (Borders and Accents): Ivory highlights are present along the inner and outer borders, as well as within floral motifs. The ivory details provide a soft contrast, brightening the overall design and balancing the intensity of the red.

  • Midnight Blue (Secondary Motifs and Borders): This deep, almost black blue is used in the intricate floral designs and borders, giving depth to the rug and defining the finer details of the patterns. It creates a grounding effect against the vibrant red.

  • Light Blue (Floral Accents): Light blue accents are scattered within the floral patterns, adding a soft coolness that contrasts with the warmer tones. It is delicately placed to break up the dominance of the red and ivory.

  • Olive Green (Floral and Vine Elements): Olive green appears in the leaves and vine motifs, symbolizing nature and growth. It provides an earthy tone that complements the red background and brings a touch of natural color to the floral designs.

  • Soft Pink (Floral Petals): A muted pink is woven into the floral elements, primarily in the flower petals, adding subtle warmth and femininity to the design. This pink blends well with the other tones, maintaining the rug's harmonious palette.

  • Brown (Geometric Outlines and Motifs): Brown is used sparingly to outline certain motifs and shapes, adding definition and contrast, and enhancing the structure of the overall design. Its presence gives the rug an earthy, grounded feel.

Patterns and Motifs:
The rug features symmetrical floral medallions framed by diagonal vine motifs, with small geometric patterns interspersed. These floral motifs reflect the traditional Bijar style of balanced, symmetrical designs that are both elegant and sturdy. The large central floral medallion, with its petal-like shapes, is complemented by smaller geometric shapes around the edges, drawing the viewer’s eye to the intricacy of the pattern.

Design and Heritage:
Bijar rugs are known for their dense weaving technique, which makes them incredibly durable. This specific Poshti rug is a fine example of this technique, with tightly woven fibers that will maintain their form even with heavy use. Originating from Bijar, a city famous for its rug-making tradition, this piece carries the legacy of centuries of Persian craftsmanship, making it both a collectible and a functional item. As handmade Persian rugs become rarer in the market, these smaller sample pieces gain significant value.
