2'10" x 4'7" Persian Nain Rug | Ivory | Medallion Arabesque | Navy Blue and Brown
This beautifully crafted Persian Nain rug delivers the hallmark qualities of one of Iran's most refined weaving traditions in a versatile accent size. Hand knotted in Nain, Iran, with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, this piece presents the classic Nain composition: a luminous ivory ground covered with an extraordinarily fine scrolling arabesque, anchored by a central medallion in deep navy blue. Nain rugs are renowned among collectors and interior designers for their cool, refined palette, exceptional detail density, and the characteristic softness of their wool pile. This example is in excellent condition and has never been used.
Design and Motifs
The composition is centered on a pointed oval medallion in deep navy blue, filled with a densely packed interior of ivory and powder blue floral forms arranged in perfect radial symmetry. Matching navy spandrels fill all four corners of the field, each carrying the same fine floral arabesque as the medallion interior. The ivory ground between the medallion and spandrels is covered with an intricate continuous arabesque of scrolling vines, small palmettes, rosettes, and curved leaves rendered in navy, powder blue, chocolate brown, and taupe. The density of the arabesque is characteristic of Nain production and gives the field a jewel-like quality when viewed up close. The border system consists of a navy main border filled with a repeating ivory and blue floral rosette vine, flanked by ivory guard borders with a navy repeating wave and floral motif pattern.
Colors and Placement
The dominant ground color is a clean, warm ivory that gives this rug an open and luminous quality and makes it exceptionally versatile for modern, transitional, and traditional interiors alike. The navy blue of the central medallion, corner spandrels, and main border provides a strong, grounding contrast that anchors the pale ground and gives the composition formal structure. Powder blue appears throughout the field arabesque and medallion interior as a softer secondary blue, adding depth and variety to the cool palette. Chocolate brown and warm taupe are woven throughout the arabesque motifs in the field, adding an earthy warmth that prevents the overall palette from reading as cold. The ivory fringe at both ends is fine and clean.
Nain Rugs
Nain is a city located in the Isfahan province of central Iran, and its rugs are recognized among the most technically accomplished and aesthetically refined in the entire Persian weaving tradition. Nain production is distinguished by its use of very fine wool, its characteristic cool ivory and blue palette, and the extraordinary density of its arabesque designs. Nain rugs are woven on a cotton foundation with a wool pile using the asymmetric Persian knot, and the finest examples also incorporate silk highlights on the pile, though this example is woven in wool throughout. At this size, the rug is perfectly suited as a bedroom accent, entryway piece, home office rug, or accent in any room where a refined Persian statement is desired without a large footprint.
