This 2'7 x 3'9 Persian Gholtogh rug is a finely hand-knotted tribal piece featuring a bold geometric medallion set against a richly saturated brick red field. Woven in northwest Iran, the rug reflects the strong graphic language and symbolic structure characteristic of Gholtogh village weaving. Its compact size, saturated colors, and crisp geometry make it an excellent accent piece for intimate spaces.

Design and Motifs

The design centers on a layered octagonal medallion composed of stepped geometry, rosettes, and symbolic floral elements. Surrounding the medallion are angular vines, stylized blossoms, and tribal motifs arranged in a symmetrical, well-balanced layout. The geometry is assertive yet refined, a hallmark of authentic Gholtogh rugs.

Border and Framing

A deep navy blue main border frames the rug, decorated with repeating diamond and rosette motifs rendered in coral, olive green, ivory, and sky blue. Multiple inner and outer guard borders add visual depth and reinforce the strong architectural structure of the composition.

Colors and Their Placement

The brick red field provides warmth and visual energy, contrasted by crisp ivory sections that highlight the medallion and surrounding motifs. Deep navy blue anchors the border, while olive green, sky blue, coral, and muted gold accents add rhythm and contrast throughout the design. Dark brown outlines give the motifs clarity and definition.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted with high-quality wool on a wool foundation, this rug has a dense, durable structure typical of village and tribal weaving. The wool has a lively texture with natural variation, contributing to the rug’s character and longevity.

Workshop History

Gholtogh rugs originate from small villages in northwest Iran and are known for their bold medallions, saturated palettes, and strong geometric language. Each piece is woven without cartoons, relying on traditional patterns passed down through generations.

Condition Note

The fringes on one side of the rug are tucked in, which is very typical for tribal rugs and absolutely not a defect. This construction detail reflects practical village weaving traditions and is commonly seen in authentic tribal pieces.
