This 3'4 x 5'5 Persian Gholtogh Rug is a bold tribal piece characterized by a deep red field framed by strong navy borders. Compact yet visually powerful, it reflects the expressive style and robust construction associated with traditional Gholtogh weaving.

Design and Motifs

The rug features a dynamic central medallion surrounded by layered geometric and floral tribal motifs. Angular forms, stepped outlines, and repeated diamond elements create movement across the field, giving the rug a strong visual rhythm typical of village-made Persian rugs.

Border and Framing

A wide navy border encloses the composition, filled with repeating geometric blossoms and tribal symbols. Narrow inner guards with zigzag detailing add contrast and define the transition between the richly patterned field and the outer frame.

Colors and Their Placement

Deep red dominates the field, providing warmth and depth. Navy blue anchors the borders and outlines, while black adds contrast throughout the design. Ivory highlights appear in the medallion and motifs, complemented by burnt orange, muted gold, and subtle green accents.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted using durable wool, this rug features a dense, resilient pile suitable for everyday use. The weave is firm and even, reflecting careful craftsmanship and the practical strength associated with Gholtogh rugs.

Gholtogh Rug Tradition

Gholtogh rugs originate from village weaving traditions in northwestern Iran, where designs are passed down through generations rather than formal workshops. These rugs are known for their bold medallions, strong geometric structure, and expressive use of color. Unlike city rugs, Gholtogh pieces favor visual strength and durability over fine drawing, resulting in rugs that feel powerful, grounded, and authentic. The patterns often reflect symbolic motifs tied to daily life, protection, and balance, giving each rug a distinct tribal character.
