This 3'3 x 4'4 Antique Persian Hamedan Tribal Rug is a striking example of early village weaving from western Iran. Featuring a powerful geometric medallion set against a saturated red field, this rug reflects the bold, expressive character Hamedan pieces are known for. Despite its age, it remains in exceptionally preserved, brand new condition, with a lively wool pile and crisp tribal definition.

Design and Motifs

The design centers around a stepped diamond medallion rendered in vivid crimson tones, surrounded by angular tribal motifs, hooked elements, abstract florals, and protective symbols. These motifs are arranged with a spontaneous, asymmetrical rhythm typical of authentic Hamedan village production, giving the rug strong visual energy and cultural authenticity.

Border and Framing

The main border features a continuous vine-and-rosette pattern woven in earthy browns and deep reds, framed by multiple guard borders. Small geometric blossoms and symbolic accents add texture and movement, creating a strong visual frame that balances the bold central medallion.

Colors and Their Placement

The field is dominated by layered shades of brick red and burgundy, transitioning into a brighter crimson medallion. Ivory corner spandrels provide contrast and openness, while accents of dark navy blue, forest green, and charcoal add depth throughout the motifs. Warm brown tones anchor the border, giving the rug an earthy, grounded presence.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, this rug displays the durable, medium-height pile characteristic of Hamedan weaving. The wool retains a soft yet resilient texture, and the tight, consistent knotting reflects skilled village craftsmanship designed for everyday use.

Workshop History

Hamedan rugs are produced across numerous villages in western Iran, each contributing subtle variations in design and color. This piece exemplifies classic Hamedan tribal aesthetics, emphasizing bold geometry and functional beauty rather than workshop formality.

Condition Note

This rug is in brand new condition, with a clean pile, intact edges, secure ends, and no areas of wear, repairs, or discoloration. Any slight waviness visible is natural to handmade rugs and will settle once the rug is laid flat.
