3'11" x 5'10" Vintage Persian Isfahan Wool and Silk Rug with Floral Medallion, Mihrab Arch, and Vase of Flowers on Ivory Field

This 3'11" x 5'10" Persian Isfahan is a vintage workshop piece, woven roughly forty years ago in the design tradition that has earned Isfahan its reputation as one of the most refined weaving cities in the world. The composition centers on a navy and pink floral medallion floating on an ivory field, framed above by a tall mihrab arch and anchored below by a stylized vase of flowers from which the entire field garden appears to grow. The pile is kork wool with silk highlights woven onto a pure silk foundation, and the rug has never been put down for use, which is why the pile remains intact and the colors still read at full saturation. For broader context on what makes an Isfahan a world reference for fine Persian weaving, our complete guide to Isfahan rugs covers the city's weaving heritage, its master workshops, and the design language they have refined over centuries.

Design and Motifs

The composition combines several of the most beloved motifs in classical Persian design into a single, beautifully balanced field. At the center sits a small floral medallion drawn around a pink and ruby rosette core, framed by a navy quatrefoil halo with palmette infill and stepped ivory cusps. Above the medallion, a tall ivory mihrab arch rises into the upper field, drawn in fine outline and filled with curling vines, palmettes, and small ground birds, evoking the prayer niche format that has been part of Persian weaving for centuries. Below the medallion, a stylized vase of flowers anchors the field, with paired peacocks and a fountain of leaves and floral heads rising up from it to fill the lower half of the rug. The remaining ivory ground is filled with the full Isfahan vocabulary, scrolling vines, lotus heads, pomegranates, rose buds, paired birds, and small jewel-toned floral clusters scattered with the precision that fine knot density allows. The main border carries a delicate star and rosette geometry in soft pink, gold, and sky blue against an ivory ground, an unusual and refined alternative to the typical palmette border, framed inside and out by twisted-rope guard borders in ivory and navy. Every motif is drawn deliberately, and nothing in the field is repeated by accident.

Colors and Placement

The palette is luminous and unusually warm. The ivory ground reads as soft cream in some light and pale buttercream in others, set against a navy medallion core, navy guard borders, and the soft pink and salmon tones that carry the star and rosette geometry of the main border. Inside the design vocabulary, ruby and burgundy carry the rose and pomegranate heads, sage green and olive carry the leafwork, and small touches of sky blue, gold, and soft brown give the rug the dimension and depth that fine Isfahans are famous for. The silk highlights catch the light differently from the kork wool ground, so the rug visibly shifts in tone depending on the angle of view and the direction of the pile, which is one of the signatures of fine Isfahan production. The 4x6 footprint is a classic Isfahan accent size, ideal in front of a sofa in a smaller living room, in front of a fireplace, in a formal entryway, in a study or library, beside a bed, or as the centerpiece of an intimate sitting room. Pairs naturally with traditional, classical, and transitional interiors, with antique and reproduction furniture, and with rooms that are designed around one truly fine art piece on the floor. The ivory palette is also unusually flexible with modern interiors that lean warm.

Persian Isfahan Rugs and the Workshop Tradition

Isfahan has been one of the great centers of Persian art for more than four hundred years, dating back to the Safavid court of Shah Abbas the Great, when the city was rebuilt as the imperial capital and its workshops set the standard for the entire Persian rug-making tradition. Modern Isfahan production carries that lineage forward through a small number of master weaver workshops whose pieces are designed by master draftsmen, woven by skilled weavers under their supervision, and produced in small numbers using the finest materials Isfahan has access to. This rug uses kork wool, the soft wool taken from the underbelly and neck of young Persian lambs, with silk used for the highlights inside the design vocabulary, and it is woven on a pure silk foundation that allows the knots to be packed at the fine density visible in the precision of the bird, vine, and flower drawing. The rug is roughly forty years old and has never been put down for use, which is why the pile is intact and the colors still read at full satura
