Design and Motifs

This 6'5" × 6'2" square Bijar rug features an intricate diamond medallion layout—a hallmark of the Bijar weaving tradition known for balance, durability, and refined detail. The double medallion design, outlined with precision, radiates outward from a central ivory field filled with a lattice of stylized blossoms and angular vine scrolls. Each section of the rug—center, corners, and borders—is defined by clear geometry and subtle color transitions that reveal the hand of an experienced master weaver.

Patterns

At the heart of this piece lies a layered diamond medallion that gradually shifts in hue and density as it expands. The inner medallion rests on a warm ivory base densely populated with navy, rust, and brown floral motifs, framed by a second medallion in rich rust red accented with dark outlines. Beyond the central form, the main field is filled with a continuous network of floral rosettes, each precisely spaced and linked by fine vine tendrils. The corner panels mirror the central motifs but reverse the color contrast, bringing symmetry and cohesion.
The border system is equally impressive, composed of multiple framing bands filled with palmettes, stylized leaves, and miniature flowers—woven with sharp clarity and balance.

Colors

Color is where this Bijar rug truly shines. The dominant hue is rust red, creating warmth and depth across the medallion and inner field. Navy blue forms the secondary tone, outlining motifs and shaping the border, giving the design a sense of stability and contrast.
Ivory appears throughout the medallion core and corner spandrels, offering lightness and balance against the darker tones. The dark brown lines act as subtle contours, defining every curve and petal with fine precision.

Accents of beige and light blue weave softly into the floral rosettes, providing visual relief and cooling contrast to the warm rust tones. Rose highlights appear within small flower centers, paired with olive green leaf details that introduce a natural, organic element. Flecks of pale gold and soft yellow glimmer subtly around the borders, evoking the sheen of traditional vegetable dyes under changing light. Hints of charcoal gray and taupe emerge along the outlines, grounding the composition with subtle shading and complexity.

Together, this color combination creates a sense of harmony between warmth and depth—each shade carefully balanced so no single color dominates, yet the entire piece radiates a unified and enduring beauty.

Materials and Craftsmanship

This rug is entirely hand-knotted using high-quality wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, producing a firm and dense pile characteristic of Bijar weaving. The structure is famously tight and compact, often referred to as the “iron rug” of Persia for its remarkable durability. Despite its density, the wool surface feels soft underfoot, with a subtle sheen that reveals the natural oils of the wool fibers. Each knot has been tied with precision, giving the motifs their crisp definition and long-lasting clarity.
