This 6'5 x 10 Authentic Persian Bijar Rug is a powerful and refined example of traditional Kurdish craftsmanship, woven for exceptional strength, density, and longevity. Bijar rugs, often referred to as iron rugs, are widely regarded as the highest quality Persian rugs within the category of wool rugs due to their uniquely compact structure and extraordinary durability. This piece features a commanding medallion composition, rich coloration, and a substantial feel underfoot, making it suitable for both formal interiors and everyday use.

Design and Motifs

The rug showcases a classic Persian medallion layout, anchored by a bold central diamond medallion filled with tightly arranged floral rosettes and geometric blossoms. The surrounding field is densely decorated with repeating Herati-inspired floral motifs, creating a balanced and richly layered visual effect. The precise symmetry and rhythmic repetition are hallmarks of authentic Bijar weaving.

Border and Framing

A wide, dark border frames the composition with scrolling floral vines, palmettes, and stylized leaves, all rendered in saturated jewel tones. Multiple guard borders add depth and structure, enhancing the rug’s strong architectural presence and emphasizing the central field.

Colors and Their Placement

The primary field is dominated by deep brick red, contrasted by a luminous ivory ground surrounding the medallion. Dark navy blue and burgundy define the medallion and borders, while rust, walnut brown, and muted gold appear throughout the floral detailing. Olive green and soft beige provide subtle highlights, with charcoal accents used sparingly to sharpen definition and contrast.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted entirely of high-quality wool, this Bijar rug is woven using a famously tight and compact technique that results in an exceptionally dense and heavy textile. The wool is firm, resilient, and long-lasting, contributing to the rug’s reputation as an iron rug. The solid foundation and compressed pile ensure the rug maintains its shape and clarity of design for generations.

Workshop History

Bijar rugs originate from western Iran and are traditionally produced by Kurdish weavers known for prioritizing strength and longevity over softness. These rugs have long been favored for their ability to withstand heavy use while retaining their visual presence.
