Rare Antique Pre-Revolution Persian Nain 9La Rug in a Sought-After 6'8 x 10'8 Size
This is a genuine antique hand-knotted Persian Nain rug in the highly respected 9La grade, measuring 6'8" x 10'8" and woven in the city of Nain in central Iran before the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Antique Nain rugs from this era are exceptionally rare to find today. The weaving quality, the hand-spun wool, the traditional vegetable and early synthetic dye combinations, and the level of craftsmanship used in the pre-revolution era are widely considered superior to what is produced in Iran today. Despite its age, this rug has never been used, never walked on, and has been preserved in excellent condition. For collectors and decorators who understand the difference between a modern Nain and a true pre-revolution Nain, this piece represents exactly the kind of rug that is becoming harder and harder to source.
Unusually High Silk Content for a 9La Grade
Nain rugs are graded by the number of plies in the warp, with lower La numbers indicating finer weaves. A 9La is already a high quality Nain with a fine knot count, but this particular rug carries something rare for its grade. Instead of the minimal silk highlights typical of a 9La, the pile of this rug contains approximately 20% silk, which is a silk ratio more commonly associated with finer 6La pieces. You can see the silk clearly in the detail photographs, catching the light across the medallion, the palmettes, and the curling vines. This higher silk content gives the rug a visible sheen, a softer hand, and richer depth of color than a standard 9La. This is one of the clearest signs that this piece was produced in the pre-revolution weaving tradition, when master workshops did not strictly follow modern grade conventions.
Classic Central Medallion Design with Shah Abbas Floral Field
The rug is laid out in the iconic Nain composition: a large oval medallion floats at the center of the field, surrounded by a dense allover pattern of curling vines, palmettes, rosettes, and stylized flowers in the Shah Abbas tradition. The central medallion is drawn in ivory and camel tones with a small star-shaped rosette at its core and a pointed pendant extending from each end. Surrounding the medallion, the field is filled edge to edge with interlocking floral vines that never repeat in exactly the same way. A wide ivory main border carries a stately procession of palmettes and blossoms, flanked on each side by narrow camel and light blue guard bands filled with smaller floral motifs. The drawing is formal, balanced, and unmistakably Nain.
True Deep Navy Field With a Refined Ivory and Camel Palette
Important note on color: the overview photographs taken on a white backdrop under bright overhead light slightly lift the navy of the field and flatten its depth. The true field color is best seen in the midfield and closeup photographs, where the ground reads as a rich, deep navy blue with indigo undertones. Against this navy, the ivory and cream of the medallion, border, and outlining vines pop with brightness. Camel and warm tan frame the field as an inner surround. Throughout the design you will find softer accent colors threaded into the florals including light sky blue, muted olive green, warm brown, burgundy, and touches of rust. The overall palette is classic formal Persian Nain, ideal for traditional living rooms, dining rooms, master bedrooms, formal offices, libraries, and study spaces where a statement rug is called for.
Origin, Construction, and Why Pre-Revolution Nain Rugs Are Prized
This rug was hand-knotted in the city of Nain, which sits on the edge of the central Iranian desert near Isfahan and rose to prominence as a rug weaving center in the early twentieth century. Nain weavers trained alongside the Isfahan masters and developed their own signature style of finely knotted, ivory-ground floral rugs on a 100% cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile. Pre-revolution Nain rugs like this one were produced when the finest hand-spun wool was still widely available, when natural dyes and early synthetic dyes were carefully balanced, and when master weavers could afford the time required to produce a 400 KPSI rug of this scale without compromise. The back of this piece shows the tight, even knotting and clean construction that has held Nain's reputation for nearly a century. Finding a pre-1979 Nain 9La in never used excellent condition, at this size, with this level of silk content, is genuinely uncommon in today's market.
