This 7'4 x 9'8 Persian Senneh rug is a finely hand knotted example of Kurdish weaving known for its exceptional precision and dense, allover patterning. Senneh rugs are admired for their tight knot structure, crisp geometry, and refined use of color, making them both visually intricate and structurally strong.

Design and Motifs

The design centers around a stepped, elongated diamond medallion formed through layered geometric outlines rather than a single bold centerpiece. Surrounding the medallion is a tightly packed repeating boteh and diamond lattice that fills the field with rhythmic movement. The symmetry and repetition create a mesmerizing visual texture that is characteristic of classic Senneh weaving.

Border and Framing

The rug is framed by a richly ornamented main border filled with stylized floral rosettes, palmettes, and angular vine forms. Multiple guard borders provide contrast and definition, reinforcing the geometry of the interior while adding depth through alternating color bands.

Colors and Their Placement

The dominant color throughout the rug is a deep, saturated burgundy that forms the primary field and much of the stepped medallion structure. This burgundy shifts subtly in tone across the surface, ranging from wine and oxblood hues in denser areas to slightly warmer brick undertones in transitional zones.

Ivory is used extensively as a contrasting element, outlining the stepped medallion, geometric lattice, and border motifs. These ivory lines create sharp definition and allow the intricate patterning to remain legible even at a distance. Within the field, ivory appears in small repeating diamonds and hooks that give the surface a finely textured appearance.

Dark brown and charcoal black are woven into the lattice motifs and medallion outlines, grounding the design and adding depth. These darker tones are especially visible in the densely patterned field and help anchor the lighter ivory details.

Muted brick red and warm camel tones appear within the interior motifs and border elements, softening the overall palette and providing gentle variation within the dominant burgundy field. These warmer accents prevent the rug from feeling flat and add visual warmth.

Soft beige is used in secondary outlines and background areas, particularly within the inner border and transitional zones between the field and the border. This beige acts as a visual buffer that eases the transition between stronger colors.

Pale celadon blue appears sparingly within select geometric and floral details, most noticeably in small accent shapes within the field and border. These cool highlights add contrast and a subtle sense of refinement.

Olive green is woven into the border florals and occasional field motifs, providing an earthy counterpoint to the reds and ivories. Blush pink is visible in small rosette elements and geometric accents, adding softness and balance to the otherwise structured design.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand knotted using wool on a traditional foundation, this Senneh rug features a notably fine knot structure that allows for sharp angles, crisp outlines, and dense pattern repetition. The even pile height and tight weave reflect skilled craftsmanship and careful finishing.

Senneh Rugs

Senneh rugs originate from the Kurdish weaving tradition of western Iran and are known for their refined geometry and controlled color palettes. This piece reflects those classic qualities through its dense patterning and precise execution.
