This 8'3 x 10 hand knotted Persian Bijar rug presents a commanding presence through its bold diamond medallion layout, dense construction, and timeless Kurdish artistry. Known for their exceptional durability and weight, Bijar rugs are often referred to as the “iron rugs of Persia,” and this piece exemplifies that legacy through its compact weave, balanced proportions, and richly layered design. The strong contrast between the ivory field and the deep red medallion creates a striking visual rhythm that anchors a room with both structure and warmth.

Design and Motifs

The design centers around a powerful stepped diamond medallion, a hallmark of classic Bijar compositions. The medallion is filled with tightly arranged geometric rosettes and lattice elements that reflect traditional Kurdish weaving language. Surrounding the medallion, the ivory field is densely patterned with repeating floral and geometric motifs, creating a continuous sense of movement without overwhelming the composition. The borders are richly ornamented with stylized blossoms, palmettes, and angular vines, framing the rug with depth and visual weight.

Border and Framing

The border system is composed of multiple guard borders that reinforce the rug’s strong architectural feel. A richly decorated main border showcases floral medallions set against darker tones, while inner and outer guard borders provide contrast and definition. This layered framing enhances the rug’s symmetry and highlights the transition between the bold central medallion and the lighter ivory field.

Colors and Their Placement

Deep brick red dominates the central diamond medallion and much of the surrounding field, establishing the rug’s bold and grounded character. This rich red tone serves as the visual anchor of the composition, drawing the eye inward and emphasizing the geometric precision of the design.

Ivory fills the outer field and creates strong contrast around the medallion, allowing the intricate motifs to stand out with clarity and balance. The ivory background lightens the overall palette while preserving the rug’s traditional depth.

Dark brown and charcoal black define outlines, lattice details, and structural elements throughout the rug. These darker tones sharpen the geometry, enhance pattern definition, and provide visual stability.

Muted burgundy enriches secondary motifs and border elements, adding warmth and complexity without overpowering the primary red tones. This layering of reds contributes to the rug’s dimensional appearance.

Soft beige softens transitions between red and ivory areas, acting as a gentle intermediary that harmonizes the overall palette. It helps maintain visual flow across the surface.

Olive green appears in floral and leaf motifs, especially in the borders, introducing an organic accent that complements the geometric structure and adds subtle variation.

Dusty rose adds warmth within smaller geometric details, offering a delicate contrast that enhances the rug’s refined craftsmanship.

Subtle navy blue is used sparingly as an accent in select motifs for depth, providing cool tonal contrast and visual punctuation within the warmer palette.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand knotted using high-quality wool, this Bijar rug features a tightly packed structure that contributes to its notable density and durability. The compact knotting technique, often combined with a wet-weaving process unique to the Bijar region, results in a rug that is firm, heavy, and exceptionally resilient. The precise execution of motifs and clean transitions between colors reflect skilled craftsmanship and long-standing weaving traditions.
