Ziegler weaving was built on one idea: take the grand 19th century Sultanabad drawing and soften the palette until it sits quietly in a room. This brand new hand-knotted Oriental rug does exactly that, with a smoky taupe brown field, a wine burgundy main border and hand-spun wool that already carries a gentle sheen straight off the loom. The pile is thick and springy underfoot, the selvages are tight, and the back shown in the photographs is even and legible knot by knot. At 8'4" x 10' it is one of the most useful of all 8 x 10 room size rugs, large enough to seat a full sofa group with all legs on. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all over design, mirrored top to bottom and side to side around a slim lozenge at the center. Two large cream palmettes anchor the long axis, two coral red palmettes sit on the short axis, and a coral cartouche holding a small gold tablet marks the middle. Between them runs a loose lattice of thin vines carrying serrated leaves, tulip heads, curling black tendrils and 8 petal rosettes, drawn with the relaxed, slightly wandering line that separates village style Ziegler work from stiff machine-perfect copies. The main border is a broad burgundy band filled with gold and ivory palmettes linked by dark olive stems and small pale vases, and it is framed on both sides by saffron guard stripes of alternating 4 petal flowers and squares. A plain taupe outer edge and hand-tied ivory fringe finish the rug cleanly.

Taupe Brown, Burgundy and Saffron: Reading the Color

The ground is a warm taupe brown that reads gray in daylight and pulls toward cocoa under lamps, with faint horizontal striation across the field where the hand-spun wool takes dye at slightly different strengths. That movement is what keeps a neutral field from looking flat. Against it, the main border is a deep wine burgundy, close to black in the shadows of the pile and bright red where the light catches the tips. The guard stripes are a strong saffron gold, the single warmest note in the rug, and they do the work of separating the dark border from the pale field. Scattered through the field are soft coral and salmon pinks, buttercup and mustard yellows, muted olive and sage greens, ivory and clotted cream, plus a few small charcoal accents in the tendrils and flower outlines. The overall effect is warm and earthy rather than bright, which is why this palette works over oak, walnut and gray stone floors alike.

Afghan Weaving in the Ziegler Tradition

Made in Afghanistan by weavers working in the Chobi Ziegler style, this piece belongs to a tradition that revived old Sultanabad cartoons for Western rooms and then refined the wool to match. The pile is natural highland wool, hand-spun so the yarn varies slightly in thickness, knotted on a cotton foundation and clipped to a medium height that shows the drawing without losing the plush. Knotting is steady and consistent across the full 8'4" width, the corners resolve properly where the border turns, and the finishing, from the flat-woven ends to the tightly wrapped sides, is workshop grade. This is a new rug in perfect condition, never used, with decades of service ahead of it.
