8' x 10' Silk Rug | Tabriz Star Medallion Design | Hand-Knotted, New and Never Used

This is a hand-knotted silk rug woven in the classic Tabriz medallion layout, and the first thing you notice in person is the light. Silk takes dye differently from wool and reflects it back, so the navy field reads almost black from one end of the room and deep midnight blue from the other, while the beige and gold medallion appears to glow from inside. The drawing is unusually fine for a piece this size, with hundreds of small blossoms, curling vines and tiny palmettes packed into every square inch of field. It has never been on a floor, the pile stands sharp and full, and the fringes and selvedges are untouched. Design and Motifs

The center is a 16 point star medallion built in concentric rings: a tiny turquoise and coral rosette at the core, a ring of navy lotus petals around it, then cream lobes filled with rose blossoms and olive leaves, and finally burgundy lancet points that radiate outward like a sunburst. Above and below the medallion hang gold pendants drawn with scrolling arabesque and a small trellis finial, the classic Tabriz anchor. The navy field around all of this is not empty for a moment: it carries a dense all over vine of pink and cream blossoms, curling saw leaves and light blue buds. Four ivory spandrels cut into the corners with deep burgundy floral cartouches set inside them, which frames the medallion and keeps the composition from reading busy. The border is the real conversation piece, an arcade of arched garden panels in burgundy, ivory and navy, each niche holding its own flowering plant, tulip spray or cypress, separated by narrow gold guard stripes filled with rosettes and cross motifs. It is a border you can stand over and read panel by panel.

A Closer Look at the Colors

Navy carries the field, a true midnight tone with a slight indigo warmth rather than a cold blue black, and it is the reason the rug anchors a room so firmly. Against it the palette is deliberately warm: soft beige and buttery cream in the spandrels and medallion lobes, saffron gold in the pendants and guard stripes, and a deep burgundy that repeats in the corner cartouches, the medallion points and the alternating border panels so the eye travels around the rug in a circle. The small work is where the color really lives, with rose pink blossoms, olive and sage leaves, bright light blue buds and flashes of apricot orange scattered across the navy ground. In the border the burgundy panels sit beside ivory ones with pale blue lattice fills, giving the outer frame a shifting light and dark rhythm. Because the pile is silk, all of these tones change with the angle of view and with the direction you brush the nap, so the same beige reads ivory in the morning and honey under lamplight.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was hand-knotted in China on a cotton foundation, following the Tabriz medallion cartoon that has become a standard of the wider Oriental rug tradition. Chinese silk workshops built their reputation on exactly this kind of work: very fine knotting, disciplined curved line drawing, and silk pile clipped low so the detail stays legible. You can see the result on the back, where the knot grid is tight and even and the pattern reads almost as clearly from behind as it does from the face, which is the honest test of a fine weave. The low clip is what allows the tiny four petal flowers in the guard stripes and the individual leaves inside the border niches to hold their shape at this scale. Silk pile is best suited to rooms with moderate traffic, a formal sitting room, a bedroom or a study, where the sheen can be appreciated and the surface stays fresh.
