9'8" x 14'7" Oriental Agra Rug, Allover Scrolling Floral, Crimson Red and Olive Green

This impressive room-size Oriental Agra rug brings together the bold coloration and grand allover floral vocabulary that made Agra one of the most celebrated rug weaving centers in India. Hand knotted with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, this rug carries the characteristic qualities of the Agra tradition: an open scrolling field without a central medallion, deeply saturated natural dye colors, and a generously proportioned border that frames the composition with equal weight. At nearly 10 by 15 feet, it is a true room-defining piece suited for the largest living and dining spaces. This rug is in excellent condition and has never been used.

Please note that some photographs may show areas of the rug appearing brighter or darker than others. This is purely a result of lighting and camera angles during photography and does not reflect the actual condition of the rug. The colors are consistent and even throughout. We also have a video available that shows the rug in full under natural light, confirming its perfect and uniform color condition.

Design and Motifs

The design is a classic Agra allover composition, presenting a continuous symmetrical lattice of scrolling vines that fills the entire crimson field without a medallion or open ground. Emerging from the vine structure are large ivory and gold palmettes, full-blown lotus blossoms, deeply serrated acanthus leaves in ivory and olive, and distinctive vase-shaped ivory pendants that are a hallmark of the Agra vocabulary. Black accent detailing appears throughout the motifs, adding sharp definition and graphic contrast against the warm red ground. The composition reads as a repeat pattern from any angle and distance, giving the rug strong visual presence across a large room. The border system is equally substantial, with a wide olive green main border filled with a continuous ivory scrolling vine carrying alternating cartouche and floral medallion forms, flanked by a narrow ivory inner guard with repeating geometric motifs and a narrow red outer guard.

Colors and Placement

The field is a deep, warm crimson red, closer to burgundy in its richness, a tone that is characteristic of the finest Agra dye work and one of the most enduring ground colors in the oriental rug tradition. The design is a classic Agra allover pattern, symmetrical from top to bottom with no central medallion and an open scrolling field that fills the entire ground with continuous interlacing vine work carrying large palmettes, lotus blossoms, serrated acanthus leaves, rosettes, and ivory vase-like motifs throughout. Against the crimson ground, the ivory and cream of the palmettes and vase forms stand out with strong contrast, drawing the eye through the rhythmic allover repeat. Olive and forest green appear in the foliage and leaves throughout the field and dominate the wide main border, which carries a continuous ivory scrolling floral vine with cartouche panels set against the green ground. The border is framed by an ivory inner guard with small repeating geometric motifs and a narrow red outer guard, layering the edge of the rug with refined detail. Gold adds warmth to the palmette centers and vine details throughout. Black accent outlines sharpen every motif and prevent the palette from reading as soft, giving the rug its graphic strength across a large room.

Agra Rugs

Agra, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is one of the oldest and most historically significant rug weaving centers in Asia, with a tradition stretching back to the Mughal imperial workshops of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The allover floral designs produced in Agra draw directly from the Mughal artistic tradition, which itself was deeply influenced by the Persian garden aesthetic. Agra rugs are known for their bold scale, generous pile height, and the characteristic luminosity of their natural wool pile. This rug is woven on a cotton foundation with a wool pile using the asymmetric knot, and the construction confirms the traditional Agra approach: thick, resilient, and built for longevity. It will perform beautifully in high-use areas and only improve in character with age and use.
