Design and Motifs

This semi-antique Persian Mashad rug, hand-knotted in the city of Mashad — one of Iran’s most revered weaving centers — embodies the grandeur of classical Persian design. It showcases a commanding central medallion, surrounded by layers of floral arabesques and tendrils in balanced symmetry. The composition represents Mashad’s mastery in combining large-scale beauty with refined detail, resulting in an exquisite piece that radiates regal sophistication.

Patterns and Weaving

Woven by skilled artisans in the mid-20th century, this rug features a dense knot count and soft wool pile on a cotton foundation. The craftsmanship is evident in the intricacy of the floral motifs and the crisp transitions between the field, medallion, and border. The pile is lustrous, tactile, and even — characteristics that have helped Persian Mashad rugs earn their reputation for luxury and endurance. The slightly aged patina enhances its charm, giving the rug a warm, time-softened glow.

Colors and Their Placement

The primary field color is a deep ruby red, which forms the dominant background of the rug. This rich red tone creates a vibrant canvas that accentuates every floral and vine detail.
At the center, the medallion bursts into life with a layered combination of navy blue, powder blue, beige, and gold, framed by outlines of rose, olive, and chocolate brown. The powder blue in the medallion’s inner details lightens the intensity of the deep red field, while the gold and ivory tones highlight the symmetry of the central flower-like star.

Surrounding the medallion, the field is filled with intricate floral sprays, palmettes, and curling vines in tones of cream, light blue, aqua green, rose pink, and golden beige, creating a living garden effect. Each motif is individually outlined in navy to provide definition and contrast.

The main border is a rich midnight blue, filled with elaborate rosettes and lotus blossoms woven in soft beige, light blue, and crimson red. The guard borders on either side use sky blue and ivory tones with rhythmic floral scrolls, lending movement to the entire piece.
Framing the outer edge, a fine rose-red binding ties back harmoniously to the field color, while the ivory fringes provide a clean visual finish.

Overall, the combination of deep ruby, midnight blue, sky blue, gold, beige, and rose gives the rug remarkable depth and warmth. The way these hues interact under natural and artificial light — sometimes glowing and sometimes softening — reflects the artistic depth only found in hand-dyed Persian wool.

Material and Craftsmanship

This rug is hand-knotted using premium Persian wool, celebrated for its softness and sheen. The high knot density allows for precise definition of motifs, while the natural dyes ensure the colors retain their beauty for decades. The texture is supple yet firm, a quality signature of Mashad weaving.
The darker lines or slight ripples visible in the photos are simply wrinkles caused by folding the rug on a pallet during storage and shipment; they will naturally flatten out after a few days once the rug is laid flat.

Durability and Origin

Made in Mashad, Persia, this semi-antique piece exemplifies traditional Persian durability and grandeur. Its scale, balance, and coloration make it suitable for large, formal interiors — from dining and living rooms to grand entryways. As with most Mashad rugs, the blend of color harmony, hand-spun wool, and centuries-old design tradition makes it a timeless work of Persian artistry.
