Design and Motifs

The drawing is pure village geometry, all straight lines and stepped edges, which is exactly what collectors of geometric rugs look for. A large 8 point stepped medallion holds the center, built from a small red lozenge at its heart, then a blue cross form, then a saw-toothed navy outline that throws serrated leaves out to the 4 directions. Above and below it, tall navy pendant cartouches carry stylized cypress and leaf forms. The brick field around the medallion is filled with hooked vine fragments, small palmettes, boxy rosettes and angular birds, no two corners repeating exactly. The 4 ivory spandrels are drawn with dark vinework and little red anchor blocks, and the wide navy main border runs an alternating chain of hexagonal rosettes and upright floral sprays, framed by narrow guard stripes of running vine.

A Brick Red Palette with Ivory, Blue and Olive

The field color is a true brick: warm, slightly terracotta, and in the close-up photographs you can see it break into soft horizontal variation where the wool took the dye at different rates, the sign of small dye lots rather than a machine-matched color. Against that brick, the corner spandrels read as a creamy ivory with a faint oatmeal cast, and the border drops to a near-black navy that gives the whole rug its frame. The medallion supplies the cool notes, a clear mid blue in the cross arms and a deep indigo in the outlines, with pinpricks of pale sky blue in the smaller rosettes. Muted olive and taupe brown fill the serrated leaves and several of the small field motifs, and scattered blush rose and soft pink flowers keep the red field from reading flat. Heriz is a group of villages east of Tabriz, on the slopes below Mount Sabalan, and its reputation comes from two things: wool and water. The local flocks grow an unusually tough, high-lanolin fleece, and the mineral-rich water used to wash and dye it is credited with the way Heriz reds and blues deepen rather than fade. Weavers there work from memory on a cotton foundation, scaling curved court patterns down into bold angular shapes that a village loom can carry, which is why the medallion here has stepped rather than rounded edges.
