Arak is a small town in west Persia which has had a flourishing carpet-weaving industry since the nineteenth century. The production is entirely commercial and was stimulated by activities of Tabriz merchants in the export markets. Their initiative was followed by the entry of European and American rug companies.
Arak also served as a collecting center for the rug woven in surrounding villages such as Farahan, Meshkabad, Sarough and Lilian. The finely woven rug of Farahan were distinguished for their excellent designs based on repeated floral-cone motifs arranged in hexagonal panels, or on meticulously worked versions of the Herati pattern.
