Woven in the workshops of Ardebil in northwest Persia, baby rugs like this began life as samples: miniature demonstration pieces woven so merchants and buyers could judge a design, palette, and knot quality before ordering the full size carpet. Now that authentic hand knotted Persian rugs have become scarce, the surviving samples are collected in their own right. This example measures 1'3" x 2', is knotted at 250 knots per square inch in wool and silk on a cotton foundation, and has never been used.

Design and Motifs

An eight petal geometric medallion in royal blue, red, and olive fills the ivory center, its petals holding serrated leaf and rosette motifs picked out in light blue silk. Orange red stepped spandrels with navy leaves and small white rosettes frame the corners, and the ivory main border runs a continuous vine of red and mint green flowers between dark guard bands dotted with pink.
