Authentic Persian Bijar Baby Rug in a Rare 1'4 x 2 Sampler Size

This is a genuine hand-knotted Persian Bijar baby rug measuring 1'4" x 2'0", a true miniature of one of the most respected weaving traditions in all of Iran. Bijar rugs come from the Kurdish town of Bijar in northwestern Persia and have earned the legendary nickname "Iron Rugs of Persia" because of their extraordinarily tight, heavy, and dense construction. These tiny sampler sizes were originally produced so dealers and customers could see exactly how a full-size Bijar would look and feel before committing to a larger piece. As authentic Persian rugs have become increasingly scarce, these little sampler rugs have taken on a life of their own and are now collected, used as accent mats, and displayed for their own beauty and craftsmanship. The rug is in excellent condition and has never been used.

Classic Herati Design with a Central Diamond Medallion

The field features the iconic Herati pattern, also known as the Mahi or fish design, which is the signature motif of Bijar weaving. At the center sits a pointed diamond medallion framed by a thin olive outline, anchored by a small central rosette. Radiating out from the medallion, the field is filled with rosettes, curled leaves, palmettes, and the classic paired fish-leaf motifs that give the Mahi pattern its name. The main border is filled with alternating rosettes on a rust ground, flanked by narrow ivory guard bands carrying tiny triangular floral accents. Everything about the drawing is traditional, tribal, and immediately recognizable as Bijar.

A Rich Palette of Rust, Navy, Ivory, and Soft Accent Tones

The color story is classic Persian Bijar. The main field is a warm rust terracotta with salmon undertones, while the corner spandrels and medallion reserves use a deep inky navy that reads almost black in low light. Ivory and cream fill the border rosettes and guard band triangles, giving the rug brightness and definition. Look closely and you will find unexpected accents of soft pink, raspberry red, muted olive green, and touches of warm brown scattered throughout the Herati motifs. The overall palette is warm, grounded, and traditional, making this little rug perfect as an entryway mat, a bedside accent, a bathroom piece, a kitchen spot rug, or even as a framed wall display for collectors.

Bijar Rugs and the Legend of the Iron Rug

This rug was hand-knotted in the Bijar region of western Iran on a 100% cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile. Bijar rugs are packed so tightly on the loom, and beaten down so firmly between each row of knots, that the finished rug is famously dense, heavy for its size, and almost impossible to fold without care. This is exactly why collectors refer to Bijars as Iron Rugs. The back of this piece shows the tight, even weave that Bijar is known for, with clean knotting and straight selvages. In the original weaving tradition these small sampler sizes were made to demonstrate the quality of full-size Bijars to buyers, and today that same craftsmanship survives in every knot of this 1'4 x 2 baby rug.
