This is an oversize Persian Sarough Mir in a true palace format, 10'6" by 14'4", carrying the celebrated mir-e boteh design across one of the most disciplined fields in Persian weaving. About 30 years old yet never used, it presents exactly as it would have the day it left the loom: deep saturated color, full pile, and crisp drawing throughout. For a room large enough to take it, a piece like this in genuine unused condition is an uncommon find, and these 10 x 14 rugs are among the hardest sizes to source in this quality.
Design and Motifs
The rich red field is covered end to end with rows of small boteh, the teardrop paisley motif that is the signature of the Sarough Mir. Each boteh leans in the same direction within its row and reverses in the next, drawn in navy, ivory, and powder blue so the whole field reads as a fine, shimmering lattice rather than a set of separate figures. This relentless, evenly scaled repeat is the heart of the mir design and the hardest thing to execute well over a field this large. Framing it is one of the most distinctive border systems in Persian rugs: a wide ivory band of stylized camels and figures rendered in a flat, archaic, almost pictographic style, flanked by a stack of many narrow guard stripes in navy, gold, and red carrying running diamonds, rosettes, and barber pole rhythms. The result is a field of quiet motion held inside an intricate, almost woven-jewelry border.
Colors and Placement
The palette is anchored by a warm, slightly tomato red ground, with the boteh worked in midnight navy, indigo, ivory, and powder blue, and the borders adding camel, pale gold, cream, and salmon. It is a classic, deeply traditional Persian color story, formal and warm at once, and the busy allover field is intensely forgiving in daily life, hiding traffic and the ordinary wear of a high-use room. At 10'6" by 14'4" this is a rug meant to define a large space: a formal living room with the full seating group aboard, a grand dining room seating twelve or more with every chair on the rug, a great room, library, or a hotel and office setting that needs a single commanding floor.
Origin and Construction
Sarough, in the Arak region of central Persia, has produced some of the country's most sought-after village and workshop carpets for well over a century, and the mir-e boteh field seen here is the design most closely associated with the name. You can read more about the type and its history in our Persian Sarough rugs guide. This carpet is hand-knotted at 160 to 180 knots per square inch with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, the sturdy, dependable construction that lets a Sarough survive generations of use while holding the fine boteh drawing crisp. Roughly 30 years old and never used, it is in excellent condition with full even pile, clean ivory fringe, and vivid unfaded color.
