9'10" x 12'7" Persian Isfahan Rug | Safavid Medallion and Corner | Deep Red Field with Navy Floral Border

This Isfahan is a textbook example of why this city is held up as the design capital of the entire Persian rug tradition. The composition is the classical Safavid medallion-and-corner format that traces directly back to the 16th century court ateliers of Shah Abbas, here drawn with the kind of restraint and precision that separates a real Isfahan from the dozens of cities that imitate the look. About 35 years old and in excellent, never-used condition, the wool has had decades to settle into its dyes and now reads with a depth that newly woven rugs simply cannot match. To understand exactly what makes Isfahan production sit at the very top of the Persian tradition, read our complete guide to Isfahan rugs.

The Safavid Medallion-and-Corner Format

The composition is built on the most prestigious design template in Persian weaving: a central pendant medallion surrounded by ivory corner pieces (called lachak in Farsi), all floating on a deep red field that is itself densely populated with curling palmettes, scrolling vines, and small flower heads. The medallion at the center is a navy-grounded ogival cartouche with a star-shaped gold and ivory core, and it answers visually to the four ivory corners which echo the same flowing palmette geometry. This is the format that defined the great Safavid carpets of Tabriz, Kashan, and Isfahan in the 1500s and 1600s, and it is still considered the high benchmark of Persian design today. What separates a fine Isfahan from a competent copy is exactly the precision visible here: every curve of every vine is intentional, every secondary palmette is drawn at the same scale as its mirror across the field, and nothing in the composition feels rushed.

The Navy Border and the Beauty of Abrash

Look closely at the navy main border. You will see subtle horizontal banding where the indigo dye shifts in tone from a deeper navy to a slightly softer blue. This is called abrash, and it happens when a weaver works through different dye lots over the months it takes to finish a rug this size. Abrash is one of the most prized signs of a hand-knotted, naturally dyed rug, and on a piece of this age (about 35 years) the variation has matured beautifully and gives the navy a sense of depth and movement that machine-uniform color cannot replicate. The border itself is densely populated with large rosette palmettes in ivory, gold, and salmon, framed inside and out by ivory floral guard borders that cleanly step the design out to the edge.

Colors and Where to Place It

The palette is the most classical combination in Persian weaving: deep red field, navy main border, ivory medallion and corners, with secondary tones of sky blue, sage green, gold, salmon, and soft brown threading through every part of the composition. The red has aged into a warm ruby that reads softer in person than it does on screen, and the ivory carries a slight gold cast from the patina of the wool itself. At 9'10" by 12'7" this is a true large-room rug that anchors a formal living room with all furniture sitting on the rug, fits beautifully under a dining table for ten to twelve with full chair pull-back, fills a master bedroom with substantial overhang on three sides, and brings real presence to a study, library, executive office, or formal entry hall.

Isfahan and the Safavid Workshop Tradition

Isfahan was the capital of the Safavid empire from 1598 onward, and under the patronage of Shah Abbas the Great the city's royal carpet workshops produced some of the most refined weavings ever made in Persia. The traditions established in those court ateliers, the medallion-and-corner format, the dense allover palmette field, the disciplined floral border, the deep red and navy palette, never disappeared. They were carried forward by master weavers who passed the cartoons and techniques down through generations, and they are exactly what you are seeing in this rug. Owning a fine Isfahan is owning a direct link to the high point of Persian textile art, executed by weavers who treat the tradition as a living craft rather than a museum piece.
