This 11.4 x 16.6 Persian Mashad rug is a masterfully woven work signed by the renowned Sheshkalani workshop. Created approximately 50 years ago and preserved in unused condition, the rug represents the highest tier of Mashad craftsmanship. Its generous scale, intricate floral composition, and refined material selection place it among collector-level Persian rugs intended for formal interiors and long-term appreciation.

Design and Motifs

The design centers around a grand medallion rendered in deep red tones, surrounded by an exceptionally dense floral field set against a rich navy background. Elaborate vine scrolls, palmettes, and flowering motifs fill the field with rhythmic balance, reflecting the classical Mashad aesthetic perfected during the 20th century. The symmetry and precision of the motifs demonstrate a workshop standard associated with elite master weavers.

Border and Framing

Multiple borders frame the composition with carefully layered floral bands. The primary border features continuous botanical forms accented by secondary guard borders that reinforce structure and visual depth. The transitions between field and border are crisp and intentional, creating a strong architectural presence without overwhelming the central medallion.

Colors and Their Placement

A deep navy field serves as the foundation of the design, allowing the red medallion to command attention at the center. Ivory, light blue, soft green, gold, and subtle pink tones appear throughout the floral detailing, providing contrast and clarity. Silk accents introduce gentle luminosity that shifts with light, adding dimensional refinement across the surface.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The pile is woven from fine kork wool, selected for its softness, resilience, and ability to hold intricate detail. Silk is used within the design for highlights and definition, while the rug features flatwoven silk selvages and a silk weft over a cotton foundation. The knotting is precise and dense, reflecting disciplined craftsmanship and a high level of technical control characteristic of master Mashad production.

Signature and Workshop History

This rug is signed by Master Sheshkalani, one of the most respected Mashad producers of the 20th century. Alongside the legendary Saber and Amoghli workshops, Sheshkalani is recognized for producing Mashad rugs of exceptional quality, refined materials, and enduring artistic value. Signed examples from this workshop are increasingly scarce and highly regarded among knowledgeable collectors.

Condition Note

The rug is approximately 50 years old and remains in never-used condition. The pile is full and even, the colors are well preserved, and the structure is stable throughout. Any visible lines are the result of folding and will naturally settle once the rug is laid flat, as the living wool relaxes over time.
