Design and Motifs

This rare square antique Bijar rug showcases the renowned durability and artistry that the “Iron Rugs of Persia” are known for. The field is richly decorated with a continuous Herati-inspired lattice of rosettes, palmettes, and diamond forms, each framed in intricate outlines. The balance of symmetry across a nearly perfect square format makes this rug highly unusual, as antique Persian weavers seldom created rugs in this dimension.

Patterns

The rug features an allover repeat pattern that radiates across the warm rust-red field, framed by an elaborate multi-tier border system. The wide main border highlights scrolling floral palmettes set against a forest-green background, anchored by repeating floral cartouches and serrated leaves. The inner and outer guard borders provide rhythmic floral bands that create harmony with the dense field.

Materials and Craftsmanship

This Bijar was woven in the Kurdish weaving region of western Persia, where rugs are known for their sturdy double wefts and tightly packed knots. The wool is characteristically strong, slightly glossy, and tightly spun, resulting in a rug of remarkable weight and durability. The pile is lush yet compact, and the structure ensures the rug lies flat while resisting wear.

⚠️ Note: The lines and wrinkles visible in the photos are only from the rug being folded due to its large size. Once laid flat, they will naturally settle as the living wool relaxes.

Purchases from Rugs.net can be refunded within 31 days, free of charge, with no restocking fee. If 31 days have gone by since your purchase, we are unable to offer you a refund or exchange. To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it, returned in like kind packaging.
