The design centers on a floral rosette medallion rendered in layered botanical forms, framed by a repeating lattice of stylized blossoms and scrolling vine motifs. The surrounding field is densely patterned, creating visual depth without overwhelming the composition. Traditional Sarough drawing emphasizes symmetry, clarity, and tightly packed ornamentation, all clearly visible in this piece.

Border and Framing

A multi-tiered border frames the rug, anchored by a navy blue main border filled with geometric floral motifs. Secondary guard borders in light blue and ivory provide contrast and structure, while the crisp framing reinforces the medallion-centric layout. The border proportions are well balanced for the rug’s size, maintaining harmony between field and frame.

Colors and Their Placement

The brick red field dominates the composition, providing warmth and visual grounding. Navy blue outlines the medallion, border framework, and select floral elements. Soft ivory highlights blossoms and lattice details, adding clarity and contrast. Muted light blue appears prominently in the medallion and border accents, while charcoal gray sharpens fine detailing. Warm beige, subtle blush, and soft camel tones soften transitions throughout the design.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted using wool pile on a traditional foundation, this Sarough rug displays a tight weave and consistent knotting. The wool has a firm yet supple handle, contributing to both longevity and refined surface texture. The craftsmanship reflects the Sarough tradition of producing rugs intended for everyday use without sacrificing decorative detail.

Sarough Rugs

Sarough rugs are historically produced in west-central Iran and are known for their robust construction and distinctive red palettes. This piece follows that lineage, showcasing classic design language rather than workshop-specific signatures.
