9'10" x 12'11" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Floral Medallion | Navy Field | Wool on Cotton

This 9'10" x 12'11" Persian Tabriz is a true room-size carpet, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 260 to 280 knots per square inch. A single red and ivory floral medallion crowns a deep midnight-navy field, anchored top and bottom by slender pendants and surrounded by an open, airy ground of detached floral sprays and bouquets. Ivory floral guard borders and a wide navy main border of rose palmettes and scrolling acanthus complete the composition, a balanced, curvilinear design typical of the workshop weaving Tabriz is known for.

Design and Motifs

At the center sits a layered floral medallion: a cream interior carrying a green and red eight-point starburst rosette, ringed by fine palmettes, lotus blooms and curling leaves, and framed by a serrated red surround with feathery outer tips. From the top and bottom of the medallion rise stepped red pendants that taper into small anchor and vase forms, drawing the eye the length of the rug. The navy field around the medallion is left largely open and scattered with naturalistic floral sprays, rosettes and leafy vine clusters, with paired flowering stems and small bouquets rising from the lower end. The corners carry loose floral spandrels rather than heavy bracket medallions, keeping the field feeling spacious. The main border runs a bold navy band of large rose palmettes joined by gold and red acanthus scrolls, set between ivory guard stripes filled with a running floral vine, with fine reciprocal minor stripes finishing the edges.

Colors and Placement

The palette is anchored by a rich, saturated midnight navy in the field and main border, set against a warm red medallion and border palmettes, with ivory and cream bringing light to the center and guard stripes. Through the florals run gold and camel, teal and emerald green, soft salmon and rose pink, and small touches of light blue, all drawn on the deep blue ground so the medallion and bouquets read with strong contrast and depth. The result is a formal, jewel-toned rug that anchors a space without feeling heavy, thanks to the open field. At roughly 10 by 13 feet it suits a large living room, a formal dining room over which a full table and chairs can sit, or a generous bedroom or great room, working equally well in traditional and transitional interiors.

Origin and Construction

Tabriz, in northwest Persia, is one of the oldest and most respected weaving centers in the country, long known for finely knotted, well-drawn medallion and floral carpets built on cotton foundations for strength and stability. This example is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a wool pile at approximately 260 to 280 knots per square inch, a fine, dense weave that holds the crisp detail of the medallion and border. Although it is around 35 years old, it has never been used and remains in excellent condition, with full pile, sound selvages and clean fringes, and color that looks as fresh as the day it left the loom.
