10' x 13'1" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Floral Field | Navy Stepped Medallion | Ivory Corners
Bold red and deep navy give this 10' x 13'1" Persian Tabriz the kind of presence a large living room or dining room needs. It is hand-knotted in wool pile on a cotton foundation at approximately 260 to 280 knots per square inch, a sturdy construction with a full pile that holds up well under furniture and daily traffic. It has never been used, is in excellent condition and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Among our 10x13 Persian rugs, it stands out for its warm, classic palette and clear, well-proportioned medallion.
Design and Motifs
At the center sits a large navy medallion with stepped, angular edges, enclosing an ivory cusped medallion with a red rosette at its core. Pendants extend from its top and bottom, each ending in a small palmette, so the medallion reads clearly along the length of the rug. The red field around it is filled with palmettes, rosettes and leafy sprays connected by thin vines, drawn with a mix of curved and slightly angular lines. In the 4 corners, ivory and salmon spandrels hold teal and blue floral motifs that echo the medallion. The navy main border carries red and ivory palmettes alternating with small lattice motifs, framed by pale green and light blue guard stripes with tiny rosettes, which give the rug a crisp outline.
Red, Navy and Ivory
Red is the color of the field, a clear, warm tone that fills most of the rug and gives it its energy. Wine red and rose red deepen and soften it in the palmettes and rosettes, while rose and salmon tones warm the corner spandrels. Navy blue carries the medallion and the main border, framing the red at both the center and the edges. Ivory lights up the inner medallion and the corners, and beige softens some of the smaller motifs. A wide range of greens and blues adds detail: turquoise and teal in the corner flowers, light blue and light green in the guard stripes, and dark green and olive green in the leaves and vines. Brown draws fine outlines throughout. The combination is lively but well balanced, and it works especially well with dark wood furniture and warm wall colors.
Tabriz, City of Weavers
Tabriz, in northwest Persia, has been a major trading city for centuries and one of the most important centers of Persian rug weaving. Its workshops are known for versatility, producing everything from fine silk pieces to sturdy wool rugs for everyday rooms, and for borrowing ideas from the villages around them. Rugs like this one blend the clear, centered medallion of the Tabriz tradition with the bolder, more angular drawing found in the region's village weaving, a combination that looks at home in both traditional and transitional interiors.
