4'4" x 6'4" Persian Qum Pure Silk Rug | Versace Design | Black and Gold
This stunning hand-knotted Persian Qum rug measures 4'4" x 6'4" and is woven entirely from pure silk in both its foundation and pile, one of the most demanding and prestigious constructions in the world of Oriental rugs. It is knotted at approximately 700 knots per square inch, a density that allows the bold Versace-inspired all-over floral design to be executed with extraordinary precision and graphic clarity. The black and gold palette gives this rug an immediate, commanding visual presence suited equally to contemporary luxury interiors and formal traditional settings. The rug is in excellent condition and has never been used, retaining its full pile depth and the brilliant luminous sheen characteristic of the finest Qum silk production. A woven signature in Persian script is present in the upper border, confirming authentic workshop origin.
Design and Motifs
The design is an all-over dense floral arabesque with no central medallion, covering the entire jet black field from edge to edge with a continuous network of bold scrolling vines, large sunflower and chrysanthemum-style blossoms, palmette heads, curling acanthus leaves, and spiral tendrils. The composition is inspired by Versace's iconic baroque floral vocabulary, translating that bold European decorative sensibility into the precise language of Persian silk weaving. Every vine curves and branches with organic fluidity while maintaining perfect bilateral symmetry across the full field. The large circular flower heads, each with layered petals and a distinctive spiral center, are the dominant motif and repeat at regular intervals across the surface, anchoring the dense surrounding lattice. The border system consists of a wide primary border on a black ground carrying a continuous bold floral vine with large palmette heads, flanked by narrow gold guard stripes, and a smaller outer border with a compact repeating floral scroll. The corner compositions are fully mitered and articulated.
Colors and Placement
The color palette of this rug is deliberately bold and reduced to two primary tones: a deep, pure jet black field and a brilliant, luminous golden yellow that covers every motif across the entire surface. The black ground is a true, saturated near-black with no grey or brown undertones, providing the maximum possible contrast against the golden floral work. The golden yellow of the motifs is bright and warm, shifting noticeably in intensity as light moves across the silk pile, ranging from a vivid lemon-gold in direct light to a deeper antique gold in shadow. This directional light shift is a defining characteristic of high-quality silk pile and gives the rug a three-dimensional, almost glowing quality that flat photography cannot fully capture. Warm amber and dark brown tones appear as shading within the flower heads, leaf bodies, and vine curves, adding depth and modelling to the motifs and preventing the design from reading as flat or graphic at close range. The border maintains the same black and gold palette, using the same golden yellow for the floral vine and the same dark brown accents for shading detail. The overall effect is one of maximum visual drama and opulence, a rug that reads as bold and luminous from across a room while revealing intricate detail at close range.
Qum Silk Rugs
Qum is a city in central Iran that became one of the world's leading centers for fine silk rug production during the twentieth century, building its reputation entirely on technical excellence and the exclusive use of pure silk. The city's weavers are particularly known for their ability to execute bold, graphic designs with the same precision as traditional Persian florals, and the Versace-inspired all-over format seen in this rug is a well-established format in premium Qum production, sought by collectors who want the technical credentials of authentic Persian weaving combined with a more contemporary or European-inflected aesthetic. Both the silk foundation and silk pile contribute to the rug's structural precision and its signature reflective quality. At approximately 700 KPSI, the drawing is exceptionally sharp and the motif outlines are crisp at any scale. The woven Persian script signature in the upper border confirms authentic Qum workshop origin and adds direct provenance to this collector-grade piece.
