This 4'7 x 7'5 Persian Bijar Halvaie Rug is a finely hand-knotted masterpiece from one of Persia’s most renowned weaving centers. Known as the "Iron Rugs of Persia," Bijar weavings are celebrated for their dense construction, durability, and striking floral aesthetics. The Halvaie workshop produces some of the most desirable Bijar rugs, often distinguished by their superior wool quality and artistic precision.

What are Persian Bijar Halvaie Rugs?
Bijar Halvaie rugs are a special class of Persian rugs woven in the town of Bijar, located in western Iran, in the Kurdish region. The word Halvaie refers to the highest grade of Bijar rugs, celebrated for their extremely fine weave, tight knotting, and robust construction. These rugs are often woven with a unique wet-weaving technique, where the wefts are beaten down while damp, producing an unusually dense and stiff foundation. This results in a rug so durable that it earned the title “Iron Rug of Persia.” Halvaie rugs combine strength with elegance, featuring intricate floral patterns, allover designs, and rich color palettes, making them both functional and collectible works of art.

Design & Motifs

The rug features a floral allover pattern with repeating rosettes, palmettes, and scrolling vinework intricately woven against a luminous ivory ground. Its balanced arrangement creates symmetry and visual rhythm, embodying the timeless elegance of Persian floral design. Unlike medallion-centered rugs, this allover style provides versatility in placement, as the beauty unfolds seamlessly across the field.

Border & Pattern

The rug’s triple border system frames the field with richness and depth. The main border, set on a navy background, showcases continuous floral bouquets encased in elliptical cartouches, while the secondary borders display fine vine-scrolls with smaller blossoms. A touch of bold red on the guard stripes provides vibrant contrast.

Materials & Craftsmanship

  • Wool: High-quality Bijar wool, known for its strength, rich lanolin content, and resilience, handspun and naturally dyed.

  • Foundation: Cotton warp and weft, ensuring stability.

  • Knotting: Extremely fine hand-knotting in the Halvaie tradition, producing sharp detailing and clarity of motifs.

  • Pile Density: Very tight weave, characteristic of Bijar, giving the rug its durability and slightly stiff handle.

This weaving method creates a dense, almost board-like structure, giving Bijar rugs their nickname "Iron Rugs."
