This Persian Bijar Halvai rug measures 6'7" x 9'8" and sits at the very top of what Bijar weaving can reach. Hand-knotted in wool at around 400 knots per square inch, it pairs a densely flowered navy field with the weight and solidity that earned Bijar its reputation as the iron rug of Persia.

What Halvai Means

Halvai is the name kept for the finest grade of Bijar weaving, the workshop-level rugs that stand well apart from ordinary village and tribal Bijars. A standard Bijar is prized mostly for brute durability. A Halvai keeps that same famous density but adds a much higher knot count, here about 400 per square inch, and that fineness lets the weaver draw flowing, curved detail a coarser rug could never hold. What you get is at once nearly indestructible and quietly refined.

Design and Color

The deep navy, almost indigo, field is covered corner to corner with an allover composition of vases, broad Guli Farang cabbage-flower palmettes, leafy sprays, and small rosettes, picked out in sage green, soft blue, rose, salmon, ivory, and gold. There is no central medallion; instead the eye wanders across a continuous garden. A red main border of bold palmettes and scrolling vines frames the whole and lifts every color against the dark ground. At this 7 x 10 size it anchors a formal living room or sits handsomely under a dining table.

Construction and Origin

Bijar is a Kurdish town in northwest Persia whose weavers beat each row of wefts down with a metal comb until the foundation is packed solid, the method behind the iron rug name. On a Halvai of this grade that density is matched with very fine knotting and richly dyed wool, so the rug is built to outlast generations while keeping every line of its detail crisp.
