This 5'5" x 8'8" Persian Sarough rug takes the road less traveled: instead of the expected central medallion, the entire warm salmon field is given over to an all-over lattice of rosettes and flowering vines. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at 240-260 knots per square inch, it is never used, in excellent condition, and comes with a certificate of authenticity. All-over Saroughs are the harder ones to find, and the pattern's even rhythm makes furniture placement effortless: there is no medallion to center a coffee table over, so the rug works from any angle.

Design and Motifs

The field is organized as a graceful ogival lattice: slender navy and rose vines arc across the salmon ground, linking wreathed rosette medallions, ivory daisy blossoms, and fan-shaped carnations in a repeat that flows evenly from edge to edge. Every element is drawn with the clarity Sarough is respected for, dark outlines around ivory petals, sage stems curling into the open ground, so the pattern reads crisply from standing height. The navy main border carries alternating ivory rosettes and rust palmettes between twin ivory guard bands of scrolling flowers, and an unusual salmon outer band, matching the field, frames the whole composition like a mat around a painting.

Color

The field sits in that coveted range between salmon, coral, and soft terracotta, a warm, sun-washed tone that decorators hunt for because it flatters wood furniture, leather, and linen alike. Against it, deep navy does the structural work in the vines, outlines, and border ground, while ivory, denim blue, sage green, ochre gold, and rose fill the blossoms. Nothing shouts; the palette has the mellow, lived-in harmony usually associated with rugs decades older. In daylight the field leans peach and airy, in evening lamplight it deepens toward burnt terracotta, and the wool's natural luster shifts gently as the pile catches the light.

Origin

Sarough, in the Arak weaving region of west central Persia, built one of the great reputations of the Persian rug trade: sturdy construction, lustrous wool, and drawing refined enough that American and European buyers absorbed nearly everything the town could weave for a century. At 240-260 knots per square inch this piece sits at the fine end of Sarough production, dense enough to render the lattice cleanly and built, like all good Saroughs, to shrug off decades of real use. A never-used example in this condition, in the scarcer all-over format and a salmon colorway, is exactly the kind of Sarough that gets harder to find every year.
