7'5" x 10'10" Persian Isfahan Rug | Wool and Silk on Silk Foundation | Navy Field | Blue Medallion | 400 KPSI

This is a fine Persian Isfahan, woven in wool and silk on a pure silk foundation at roughly 400 knots per square inch. A small sky-blue medallion sits at the heart of a deep navy field that is filled, edge to edge, with a densely drawn paradise garden of flowering vines, palmettes, and perched birds. At 7'5" x 10'10" it is a fine room-size carpet, and at this knot count every blossom and tendril is rendered with the precision Isfahan is famous for.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Isfahan medallion-and-field design built on a strict vertical symmetry. At the center, a small pointed sky-blue medallion with a pale ivory core is wrapped in feathery acanthus leaves and crowned with a finely drawn floral cartouche, with matching pendants reaching above and below along the long axis. The navy field around it is alive with scrolling vines that carry large serrated palmettes, lotus blossoms, rosettes, and clusters of small flowers, and woven among them are numerous birds, a hallmark of the Isfahan paradise-garden tradition, perched and in flight throughout the foliage. The mirrored top and bottom anchors of the field hold elaborate leafy palmette sprays in gold, red, and blue. It is a busy, jewel-like field, but it never loses its order, every motif balanced against its twin across the center line.

Colors and Placement

The palette is deep and rich: a navy and indigo ground set against a warm red border, with the design picked out in sky blue, ivory, cream, gold, soft green, and touches of rose. The silk worked into the pile catches the light along the vines and petals, lifting them off the dark ground and giving the surface a quiet sheen that shifts as you move around it. The red main border, drawn with its own procession of palmettes and blossoms between ivory floral guard stripes, frames the navy field crisply and makes the whole composition read as one balanced, formal panel. At 7'5" x 10'10" this rug anchors a living room, dining room, or study with a jewel-toned richness, and its fineness equally suits it to display as a work of art on the wall.

Origin and Construction

Isfahan, in central Persia, is among the most celebrated weaving cities in the world, known for finely knotted medallion carpets of exactly this character. This piece is hand-knotted in wool and silk on a silk foundation at roughly 400 knots per square inch, a density that allows the curved vines, birds, and minute florals to be drawn with painterly accuracy, as the close detail and reverse photos make clear. Woven approximately 30 years ago and never used, it is in excellent condition. To learn more about this weaving tradition, see our complete guide to Isfahan rugs.
