6'7" x 9'11" Persian Moud Rug | Garden Panel Design with Cranes and Deer Border | Brand New
Count the panels on this 6'7" x 9'11" Persian Moud rug and you reach 96, each a small garden of its own, from weeping willows to gold arabesques to paisley sprays. Then look at the border, where white cranes and leaping deer move through flowering trees on a rust red ground. The field is busy and cheerful, and the wide pictorial border gives it a frame worth studying. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at 320 to 340 knots per square inch, it is brand new and has never been used, and it comes with our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is laid out as 8 columns by 12 rows, with each panel framed by a thin ivory band studded with tiny red and gold beads. Around 8 designs repeat across the grid in a steady diagonal rhythm. Weeping willows of fine green leaves stand on ivory grounds beneath a row of pink buds. Large navy boteh with serrated rust outlines sit among hanging blossoms. Forest green panels hold a gold arabesque medallion. On mustard grounds, ivory scrolls curl into symmetrical arabesques. Ivory panels carry delicate lattices of pink and lavender flowers, and arched ivory niches are filled with blue blossoms. Rust panels show a single branching tree in blue, pink and ivory leaves, and sky blue panels are scattered with orange rosettes. The border is the real surprise. On a rust red ground, pairs of white cranes with gold wings stand by small blue streams, deer leap past flowering trees, and clusters of blue and ivory blossoms fill every gap. Sky blue guard stripes on both sides carry tiny birds perched among rosettes and tulips, and a narrow rust band with small navy motifs finishes the outer edge.
The Colors: Rust Red, Sky Blue and Ivory
The rust red of the border is warm and slightly brick-toned. It frames the whole rug and is the color you notice first from across a room. Sky blue, clear and soft, runs through both guard stripes and lights up many of the panels, while ivory carries the grid lines, the willow panels and the arched niches and keeps the field from feeling heavy. Within the panels, the palette widens. Deep navy anchors the boteh panels, forest green and mustard gold give the arabesque panels their glow, and olive and moss green fill the willows. Orange and saffron rosettes warm the sky blue panels, rose pink and lavender soften the flowers, and chocolate brown outlines the trees and branches. The cranes are worked in bright white with saffron gold wings, the brightest touch in the border. Because the rug is new, every color is at full strength and sharply separated. The fringe is natural ivory cotton.
Moud: Fine Wool Weaving from Eastern Persia
Moud is a weaving town in South Khorasan, in eastern Persia, near the city of Birjand. Its weavers are known for soft, lustrous local wool, tight weaving and clean drawing, most often in the herati pattern or in garden panel designs like this one. Persian Moud rugs have a refined, almost city-workshop finish while keeping a village feel in their color. At 320 to 340 knots per square inch, this rug is well above average for its type, which shows in the willow leaves, the arabesque scrolls and the feathers of the cranes. Among 7x10 Persian rugs, a brand new Moud garden carpet with a pictorial animal border is a lively centerpiece for a dining room, living room or study.
