6'6" x 6'6" Modern Tibetan Style Square Rug | Deep Red | Carved Leaf Motif Border
Square rugs solve a problem rectangular ones cannot, and this 6'6" x 6'6" piece is made for exactly those spaces: under a round or square dining table, in a square sitting room, or at the center of a bedroom or study. It is a Tibetan style rug handmade in India, hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation at approximately 160 to 180 knots per square inch, with a thick, plush pile in a rich deep red. It sits among our modern and contemporary rugs and has never been used. It ships with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knot count.
Design and Motifs
The design is clean and graphic. A large plain field of deep red is framed by a slightly darker burgundy border, so the frame reads as a subtle tone on tone line rather than a contrast band. Set into that border are 8 small tiles: beige tiles carved with ivory leaves and branches, and bright red tiles carved with ivory flower buds, placed at the corners and along the sides. The motifs are cut into the pile by hand, a carving technique that gives them a raised, sculpted edge you can feel underfoot. Because the field is open and the motifs sit only at the edge, the rug works well under furniture and lets a table or seating group become the focus.
Deep Red, Burgundy and Beige
Deep red covers almost the whole rug, a warm, saturated color that shifts between cranberry and wine depending on the light and the direction of the pile. The burgundy border is just a shade darker, which frames the field without breaking up the color. The beige tiles add a soft, neutral contrast, and their ivory carving stands out clearly against both the beige and the red. The bright red tiles bring a lighter, livelier red that ties back to the field. This bold, warm palette suits modern, Asian-inspired, rustic and eclectic rooms, and it pairs especially well with dark wood, black metal, cream walls and natural textures.
Tibetan Style, Handmade in India
Tibetan style rugs are known for their thick, soft pile, simple bold designs and generous use of solid color, a look that grew from the weaving traditions of the Himalayan region. Indian workshops have long produced rugs in this style, combining hand knotting with hand carving to create the raised motifs seen in the border tiles here. Knotted in wool on a wool foundation, this square rug is sturdy and comfortable, and with its never used pile and deep red color it is a warm, practical piece for a room that needs a square rug.
