8' x 8' Square Chinese Silk Rug | Art Deco Floral Design | Soft Green Field, 2000s

A true square at 8' x 8', this hand-knotted Chinese rug is woven entirely in silk, and you can see it in every photograph: the pile flips from pale to deep as the light moves across it, and the carved outlines around each blossom catch a sheen that wool simply cannot produce. The design is Art Deco China, a soft sage green field scattered with blue and ivory leaf sprays, four large pastel flower bouquets and long lavender fretwork panels running the length of the field, all held inside a gold guard stripe and a plain mocha brown outer border. It dates to the 2000s and is in perfect condition with full pile and clean, even fringe. Design and Motifs

The drawing is asymmetric on purpose, which is what separates Art Deco work from classical floor coverings. Instead of a central medallion, 7 long rounded panels filled with interlocking fretwork and key meander lines run vertically through the field like architectural columns, each one planted with single 6 petal blossoms in coral, plum, gold and olive. Around them, 4 large bouquets of peonies, lotus and small star flowers spill across the corners and the lower center, drawn loose and painterly rather than mirrored. The open ground between them is filled with an airy scatter of split leaf sprays in 2 tones of blue with ivory tips, which keeps a square format from looking static. The pile is carved and embossed along every outline, so each leaf and petal sits slightly proud of the ground, a hallmark of this workshop tradition that you can see clearly in the close-up detail shots. The border is deliberately quiet: a narrow gold band and then a wide plain brown frame that lets the busy field breathe.

A Study in Soft Green, Lavender and Gold

The field is a muted sage green with a faint celadon cast, one of the most useful backgrounds in green area rugs because it sits quietly under both cool grey and warm cream walls. Over it, the leafwork is worked in powder blue and a slightly deeper cornflower with ivory highlights, while the fretwork panels are drawn in periwinkle lavender over a pale oyster ground. The bouquets bring in the warm side of the palette: antique gold, butter yellow, apricot, dusty rose, mauve and 1 or 2 deep burgundy accents that anchor everything. The guard stripe is a clear chartreuse gold and the outer border is a soft mocha brown that reads almost olive under warm light, as seen in the corner and fold photographs. Because the pile is silk, all of these colors shift in tone as you walk around the rug, going from pastel and washed in one direction to saturated and jewel-like in the other.

Chinese Silk Weaving and the Art Deco Tradition

Art Deco floor coverings first came out of the Chinese workshops in the 1920s and 1930s, when weavers dropped the old symbolic layouts in favor of open grounds, off-center bouquets and flat graphic banding aimed at Western decorators. This piece is a modern continuation of that line, hand-knotted in the 2000s in pure silk on a cotton foundation, with the pile clipped short and then hand carved around the outlines so the pattern holds its edge. It is an Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term, woven by hand knot by knot rather than tufted or machine made, and the reverse shown in the final photograph confirms the weave with its clear, even knot rows and hand-tied fringe. A genuine 8 foot square in silk is not a size you find often, which makes this one a natural fit under a square dining table, in a sitting room seating group, or in a room where a rectangular rug has never quite worked.
