This 9'10 x 13'1 Bijar Persian Iron Rug represents the epitome of Persian weaving excellence. Hand-knotted approximately 40–50 years ago in Bijar, Iran, this masterpiece has never been used and remains in immaculate condition, appearing as vibrant and pristine as the day it was woven. Bijar rugs are celebrated for their exceptional density and longevity — famously known as the “Iron Rugs of Persia.” Within the world of handwoven wool rugs, Bijar stands at the very top in quality, admired for its strength, structure, and enduring beauty.

Design and Motifs

The design showcases a commanding hexagonal medallion nested within an intricate, allover field of finely detailed floral and geometric motifs. Every inch of the rug is a display of harmony — rhythmic vines, rosettes, and symmetrical florals interlacing to form an ornate lattice. The wide outer border frames the rug with a series of bold palmettes and stylized blossoms, enclosed by delicate vine scrolls and multiple guard bands. The overall layout combines strength and precision, perfectly reflecting Bijar’s weaving heritage.

Patterns

The rug’s field is densely packed with small, repeating floral forms arranged in a diamond lattice — a signature Bijar characteristic. The ivory medallion at the center floats above a rich crimson ground, creating visual depth and contrast. The dark navy corners and borders balance the composition, adding gravity and sophistication to the vibrant field. Every motif has been knotted with astonishing consistency, demonstrating the weaver’s masterful control of proportion and detail.

Colors

This Bijar rug presents an exceptionally rich and mature color palette, perfectly preserved over time:

  • The central medallion is rendered in ivory and soft gold, detailed with hints of rose and olive green.

  • The main field glows in deep brick red with floral knots in pink, coral, light blue, moss green, and soft beige, each accent carefully balanced.

  • The corner spandrels shift into a sophisticated midnight navy, densely filled with rose and blue florals that transition smoothly into the field.

  • The outer border features a flowing vine pattern in burgundy, cream, light blue, pistachio green, coral, and gold, creating a rich frame that anchors the composition.

Despite its age, the colors remain vivid, luminous, and completely unfaded, showing the superior quality of Bijar dyes and wool.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Woven with ultra-dense hand-knotted wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, this rug embodies why Bijar rugs are considered the highest quality in the wool category. The pile is thick yet tightly compacted, giving it a heavy, almost indestructible texture that earned it the title “Iron Rug.” Its surface feels plush yet firm, ensuring both luxury and durability. Each knot is pulled taut, contributing to its remarkable structure and longevity — characteristics only achievable through generations of skilled Kurdish weavers in Bijar.

Condition Note

This rug is in excellent, like-new condition, despite being handwoven nearly half a century ago. It has never been used or walked on, and its surface, pile, and colors appear exactly as they did when it was first woven. The dark lines visible in certain photos are temporary folds from storage and will naturally flatten within a few days of being laid flat due to the elasticity of the wool fibers.
