10x13 Authentic Persian Bijar Rug | Hand-Knotted Wool | 420 KPSI

This is an exceptional Persian Bijar rug in brand new, never-used condition, hand-knotted in pure wool on a cotton foundation at a remarkable 420 to 450 knots per square inch. Bijar rugs are famously known as the "iron rugs of Persia" for their legendary density and durability, and this 10x13 example represents the highest quality wool rug in this category. The generous room size makes it ideal for formal living rooms, dining rooms, great rooms, and master suites where it can anchor a full seating arrangement or run the length of a ten to twelve person dining table. The classic red field with ivory hexagonal medallion and navy accents delivers a timeless, formal composition that works equally well in traditional, transitional, and even contemporary interiors.

Please note that any waves, shadows, or wrinkles visible in some of the photographs are simply the result of the rug being folded and stored on pallets during transit. They are not permanent and will completely flatten out within a few days of being laid on the floor. We also professionally iron every rug before shipment to ensure it arrives in the best possible condition.

Design and Motifs

The composition is anchored by a prominent ivory hexagonal medallion at the center of the deep red field, with a navy inner diamond at its core filled with fine Herati pattern work. Small ivory pendant finials crown the medallion at top and bottom. Four ivory quarter-medallion spandrels frame the corners, each carrying the same Herati fish motif drawing that defines the field. The red field between medallion and corners is covered edge to edge with the classic Herati or Mahi pattern, a dense and elegant lattice of diamonds framing rosettes, curled leaves, and tiny fish motifs from which the pattern takes its name. The navy main border carries a grand floral vine with alternating rosettes and palmettes, framed by narrow ivory and brick red guard stripes with their own floral repeats.

Colors and Placement

The field reads as a rich deep red, warm and saturated, with a beautiful natural abrash that gives the wool dimension and depth. Against that ground, the ivory medallion and ivory corner spandrels lift the composition and create a strong classical balance, while the navy inner diamond and navy main border provide the deep anchoring contrast that makes the rug feel grounded and formal. Throughout the Herati field work you will find pale pink, coral, sky blue, olive green, soft green, pale yellow, and burgundy accents, giving the rug its full chromatic richness without ever breaking from the red, ivory, and navy framework. This rug pairs naturally with dark wood furniture, warm neutrals, navy upholstery, classic millwork, and traditional or transitional interiors, and it is equally at home in a contemporary space looking for a single grand traditional anchor.

Bijar Rugs and Construction

Bijar is a Kurdish weaving town in western Iran, and Bijar rugs are universally recognized as the most durable and densely woven of all Persian rugs, earning them the nickname "the iron rug of Persia." Bijar weavers use a specialized technique where the wool is wet-knotted and then beaten down extremely tightly with heavy metal combs during weaving, producing a pile so dense and compact that the rug feels almost rigid and metallic, with exceptional knot density reaching 420 to 450 knots per square inch in fine examples like this one. This construction method makes Bijar rugs the heaviest, strongest, and longest-lasting of all Persian rugs, perfectly suited to high-traffic formal rooms where longevity and presence matter. For a deeper look at Bijar weaving heritage, construction, and what makes these rugs last generations, read our complete guide to Bijar rugs. Finding a true 10x13 Bijar in this knot count and in brand-new condition is genuinely rare, as most Bijar production runs in smaller room sizes; this piece is a serious collector and heirloom investment.
