10x13 Authentic Persian Moud Rug | Hand-Knotted Wool | 220 KPSI
This is an exceptional Persian Moud rug in excellent, never-used condition, hand-knotted in pure wool on a cotton foundation at 220 to 240 knots per square inch. Moud rugs, woven in the South Khorasan province of eastern Iran, are celebrated for their refined allover Herati drawing, their soft cream and ivory field colors, and their disciplined curvilinear knotwork that sits somewhere between the formal precision of Isfahan and the more relaxed drawing of Tabriz. This 10x13 size is ideal for formal living rooms, dining rooms, great rooms, and master suites where it can anchor a full seating arrangement or run the length of a ten to twelve person dining table. The cream field with red border palette is one of the most versatile color combinations in Persian weaving, working equally well in traditional, transitional, and contemporary interiors.
Please note that any waves, shadows, or wrinkles visible in some of the photographs are simply the result of the rug being folded and stored on pallets during transit. They are not permanent and will completely flatten out within a few days of being laid on the floor. We also professionally iron every rug before shipment to ensure it arrives in the best possible condition. Please watch video.
Design and Motifs
The composition is an open, medallion-less allover design, one of the most sought-after Moud formats. The cream field is covered edge to edge with the classic Herati or Mahi pattern, a dense and precise lattice of small diamonds framing tiny rosettes, curling leaves, and fish motifs from which the pattern takes its name. The drawing is finer and more delicate than what you find on most Bijar or Hamedan Herati rugs, which is what gives Moud pieces their distinctive refined character. The red main border carries a graceful floral paisley vocabulary of alternating boteh, diamond rosettes, and curling vine, framed by multiple ivory, blue, and brown guard stripes that give the rug a polished finished edge. The overall effect is calm, balanced, and sophisticated.
Colors and Placement
The field reads as a warm cream to soft beige, one of the most flexible neutral backgrounds in the Persian tradition, with fine detail picked out in rust, pink, coral, sky blue, navy, olive green, and soft brown. The red border is rich without being heavy, leaning more terracotta than crimson, which keeps the contrast with the cream field soft and harmonious rather than stark. This rug pairs naturally with cream upholstery, warm wood tones, linen textiles, and traditional or transitional interiors, and its neutral field also makes it an excellent anchor in contemporary spaces where a heavier red-ground rug would feel too dominant. It sits especially well under a dining table where the open cream field shows off the craftsmanship from above.
Moud Rugs and Construction
Moud (also spelled Mood or Mud) is a town in the South Khorasan province of eastern Iran, and Moud rugs are part of the wider Khorasan weaving tradition that includes Birjand and Mashad. They are known for their disciplined Herati field drawing, their preference for cream and ivory grounds where other regions prefer red, and their fine wool pile on cotton foundation at knot densities typically in the 200 to 300 KPSI range. The rug is hand-knotted entirely by hand, knot by knot, and carries its original German retailer certification label confirming Moud province origin and 393 x 297 cm dimensions. Moud rugs are an excellent choice for buyers who want the quality and heritage of a fine Persian city weave without the heavier red palette of Kashan, Bijar, or Tabriz, and a true 10x13 in this condition is a genuine heirloom investment.
