Authentic Persian Sarough Rug in a Sought-After 8'10 x 13'2 Room Size
This is a genuine hand-knotted Persian Sarough rug measuring 8'10" x 13'2", a true room sized piece woven in the Sarough region of west central Iran near the city of Arak. Sarough rugs, also commonly spelled Sarouk, have been one of the most beloved and collected names in Persian rug history for well over a century, with the American market in particular embracing them as the gold standard of formal traditional Persian floor coverings. This particular piece showcases everything that makes a great Sarough so desirable: a luminous ivory field, a beautifully drawn central medallion, dark navy corner spandrels, a richly colored rust main border, and a confident curvilinear drawing throughout. The rug has never been used and is in excellent condition.
Classic Sarough Composition With a Diamond Medallion and Navy Spandrels
The layout is the most beloved Sarough composition. A diamond shaped central medallion sits at the heart of the field, drawn in rust, terracotta, and navy with finely detailed florals at its core and small pendants extending from each end. Surrounding the medallion, the ivory field is filled with an allover pattern of curling vines, palmettes, rosettes, and stylized flowers in the Shah Abbas tradition. Each of the four corners is anchored by a large dark navy spandrel filled with ivory and rust florals, framing the field and giving the composition a strong architectural balance. The main border is a wide rust ground filled with a stately procession of palmettes, vines, and rosettes, flanked by sky blue guard bands carrying smaller floral motifs. The drawing is formal, balanced, and unmistakably Sarough.
A Luminous Ivory Field With Rust, Navy, Sky Blue, and Green Accents
The color story is exactly what makes a Sarough so adaptable in a real room. The field is a warm luminous ivory that brightens any space it sits in, with a subtle cream undertone where the wool catches the light. Against this ivory, the rust main border and rust medallion provide the dominant warm anchor, sitting somewhere between terracotta, brick red, and salmon depending on how the light hits the pile. The navy corner spandrels and outlining details give the rug visual structure and contrast. Look closely and you will find a rich palette of accent tones threaded through the floral motifs, including sky blue, light blue, forest green, soft pink, salmon, coral, warm brown, and touches of cream. The overall palette is formal, classic, and deeply traditional, ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, master bedrooms, libraries, formal offices, and any large traditional space that calls for a statement Persian rug.
Origin, Construction, and Why Sarough Rugs Have Endured
This rug was hand-knotted in the Sarough weaving region of west central Iran, near the city of Arak, on a 100% cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile. Sarough rugs are built for life in a real home. The wool is firm and durable, the weave is tight and even, and the construction is heavy enough to withstand decades of use in a high traffic room without losing its drawing or color. The back of this piece shows the clean even knotting that buyers have come to expect from a quality Sarough. For more than a century, Sarough rugs have been the choice of American buyers furnishing formal traditional homes, and they have proven themselves over and over as one of the most reliable, beautiful, and value retaining names in the Persian rug world. A 9 x 13 Sarough in this condition, with this drawing and this palette, is exactly the kind of rug that anchors a room for a generation.
