9x12 Modern Gabbeh Rug | Red Field with Striped and Checkerboard Panels | Made in India | 120-140 KPSI

Most rugs this size are trying to be traditional. This one is not. It is a brand new 9x12 Gabbeh, hand-knotted in India in wool with silk highlights on a cotton foundation at 120 to 140 knots per square inch, and the whole design rests on restraint: a deep red field left mostly open, a wide camel border, and four blocks of pattern placed off center like objects on a table rather than a repeating motif. If you have been looking for something that reads modern without reading cold, this is what that looks like in a hand-knotted Oriental rug. A certificate of authenticity comes with it.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The faint lines and patches of shading visible across the red field are fold marks. This rug has been stored folded on a pallet, and pile that has been pressed in one direction catches light differently until it recovers. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and we also steam and press every rug professionally before it ships, so it arrives flat and ready to go down.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion, no border pattern and no repeat. The red field is framed by a plain camel band and then left almost entirely open, and into that space the designer has dropped a handful of separate elements. Two large rectangular panels carry horizontal stripes in brown, tan and cream with a block of checkerboard squares set into the middle of each, the squares alternating sage green, apricot and cream. A third smaller panel sits alone in solid sage with a subtly striped surface, no pattern at all, acting as a counterweight. Between and around them, two long stylized lily stems climb across the red in cream and pale gold, drawn with a loose calligraphic line that has more in common with a brush drawing than with woven ornament. Each leaf is shaded from gold at the tip to green at the stem so it reads as dimensional. What makes the composition work is the asymmetry: nothing lines up, nothing mirrors, and the eye moves between the four elements instead of settling in the middle. That is a much harder thing to get right than a symmetrical layout, because there is no formula to fall back on.

Colors in Detail

The field is a deep true red with a slight brick warmth to it, not a cherry red and not a rust, and because so much of it is left open the color itself becomes the main event. Around it the border is camel, a warm mid tan with a golden cast that sits close enough to the red in value that the frame reads soft rather than hard, which is why the rug feels calm despite the strong ground color. Inside the panels the palette shifts to neutrals: cream, wheat, a deeper walnut brown in the stripes, and blocks of dusty sage green and pale apricot in the checkerboards. The lily stems are drawn in cream and pale gold with soft olive green shading through the leaves and stems. That is the whole palette, seven colors, all of them in the warm half of the spectrum, and the restraint is deliberate. The silk highlights are worked into the lily leaves and parts of the panel squares, and they show up as a sheen that shifts when you walk past rather than as a separate material. Against a room with wood floors or warm walls this is a rug that anchors without competing.

Origin and Weaving

This rug was hand-knotted in India, and that is worth being clear about because India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. The weaving centers there took the traditional techniques and put them behind modern design studios, which is how you get a rug like this one: knot by knot on a loom, the same construction that has been used for centuries, carrying a design that would look at home in a gallery. At 120 to 140 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation the weave is medium fine, which suits this design exactly. Large open fields of solid color need enough density to lie evenly without banding, and the drawn lily stems need enough resolution to hold a curve. Turn it over and the pattern comes through clean on the back. Brand new, never used, full pile, straight sides and clean fringe.
