The dining room is the easiest room in the house to get a rug wrong, and the easiest to get right. The one rule: 24 inches beyond the table, every side

Measure your table, then add at least 24 inches of rug on every side, and 30 inches if the room allows it. That is the distance a chair travels when someone pulls it out to sit down, and it means the chair's back legs stay on the rug at all times, pulled out or tucked in. Everything else in dining room rug sizing is just this rule applied to your table.

Two quick checks alongside it: leave a border of bare floor between the rug's edge and the walls, roughly 18 to 24 inches, so the rug reads as chosen for the room rather than wall-to-wall. And center the rug on the table, not on the room, since the table is what the eye lines up.

The right size for your table

For a round table, keep the same 24-inch rule in every direction: a round or square rug mirrors the table's shape best, and an 8x10 also works for a small round table if the room is rectangular. When your measurement lands between two sizes, take the larger one; a rug slightly too big for the table always looks better than chairs falling off the edge.

Which rugs survive a dining room

A dining rug lives a hard life: chair legs dragging across it many times a day, crumbs, and the occasional spilled glass. Hand-knotted wool is exactly the right tool for that job. Wool is naturally resilient and springs back where chair legs press it, lanolin in the fiber resists staining, and a dense weave shrugs off decades of dinners. The famously tough origins are the natural picks: a Bijar above all, plus Tabriz, Sarough, and Kashan.

Pattern helps too. A busy field, an allover design or a detailed medallion with rich borders, hides the everyday between vacuumings far better than a plain open field. Deeper palettes, reds, navies, rusts, forgive a dinner party; a pale silk belongs in the living room, not under the gravy.

Three mistakes to avoid

First, the too-small rug, the one mistake that cannot be styled around: if chairs fall off the back edge, no color or pattern rescues it. Second, matching the rug to the room instead of the table: a long table in a square room still wants a rug shaped to the table. Third, fearing the rug will be "wasted" under a table. The opposite is true: the border and field frame the table like a stage, and the dining room is where guests sit still long enough to actually admire a great rug.
