Rancho Santa Fe began as a eucalyptus plantation, trees the Santa Fe Railway planted for railroad ties that proved useless for the job and priceless for everything else. In 1928 the architect Lilian Rice shaped the land into a complete village in the Spanish Colonial style, and the Covenant has protected her vision ever since, one of the earliest planned communities in California and still among the most exclusive addresses in America. Lilian Rice gave the Ranch a vocabulary it still speaks: white plaster walls, dark exposed beams, terracotta floors, deep loggias against the sun.
