This is a vintage Persian Tabriz, about forty years old, hand-knotted in the classic medallion and corner layout that made Tabriz one of the most recognizable weaving cities in Persia. A deep red field carries a layered ivory and navy medallion at the center, framed by golden corner spandrels and a richly drawn indigo border. At roughly 10 by 13 feet, it is a generous room-size piece with decades of character already woven in.
A note on condition: This is a genuine vintage rug in overall very good shape, with a few areas of low pile and light wear consistent with about forty years of gentle use, along with some natural abrash, the subtle color variation that comes from small-batch natural dyes and is a hallmark of an authentic handmade rug rather than a defect. It has been cleaned and is ready to use.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a stepped ivory and navy medallion with a red floral diamond at its core, anchored top and bottom by smaller pendant cartouches. Around it the red field is filled with teal cruciform medallions, ivory diamonds, leafy vinework, and small floral sprays, while golden corner spandrels carry their own rosettes and palmettes. The wide indigo main border runs with eight-petal rosettes, serrated diamonds, and boteh, framed by ivory guard stripes of repeating vine and blossom, the kind of layered, busy drawing collectors associate with traditional Tabriz workshops.
Colors and Placement
The palette is built on a warm red ground worked with navy, gold, ivory, teal, rose, and sky blue, a saturated traditional combination that brings warmth to a large room. At about 10 by 13 feet this is a true room-size rug, suited to living rooms, dining rooms under a full table setting, and larger family rooms where it can sit beneath furniture and still show its field and border. The deep red ground hides everyday traffic well, which makes it practical as well as decorative.
Origin and Construction
Tabriz, in the northwest of Persia, has been a major center of fine rug weaving for centuries and is known for crisp medallion designs and durable construction. This example is hand-knotted in wool pile on a cotton foundation at roughly 160 to 180 knots per square inch, a solid workshop weave that has held its pattern clearly over four decades.
